Synopsis
In Universal Century 0068, Casval Rem Deikun’s world collapses when his father—an influential advocate for the rights of those living beyond Earth—is assassinated. With help from soldiers still loyal to the Deikun cause, Casval and his sister Artesia are rushed out of their home, separated along the way, and forced onto diverging paths that push them toward adulthood amid growing political turmoil.
Long before he takes the name Char Aznable and earns the title “Red Comet,” Casval faces the hardening of his father’s ideals into a militarized movement, as well as his own simmering thirst for revenge. As interstellar conflict escalates, war and circumstance begin shaping him into the mobile suit pilot history will come to remember.
Otaku Consensus
Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s commanding visual direction, dense political pacing, and remarkably polished adaptation of the manga’s prequel material make The Origin one of Gundam’s strongest modern productions, with the Casval-focused first four installments receiving the highest praise. Its CG-enhanced battles and character drama broaden the Universal Century beyond routine mecha spectacle, though the final two episodes function more as an elaborate bridge to the 1979 series and expose continuity changes that do not fit together cleanly. Best viewed after the original Mobile Suit Gundam, it is illuminating franchise history rather than an ideal introduction.
Why You Should Watch
Watch The Origin if you want Gundam’s military machinery embedded in conspiracies, ideological fractures, and dynastic power struggles rather than a battle-of-the-week framework. Its six-episode format gives Sunrise room for cinematic action, expressive character acting, and political conversations whose consequences matter as much as any mobile suit sortie. The result scratches the institutional-intrigue itch of Legend of the Galactic Heroes and, at times, the procedural seriousness of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, while retaining Gundam’s preoccupation with revenge, inherited conflict, and compromised ideals. It is especially rewarding for viewers already familiar with the Universal Century: familiar names and symbols gain sharper, sometimes revisionist context. Come for Char’s psychological construction; stay for a production that treats tanks, prototype machines, and political theater with equal dramatic weight.
Key Characters
- CChar Aznable(VA: Mayumi Tanaka)
Char is presented less as an untouchable franchise icon than as a calculating antihero whose charisma, grief, and capacity for reinvention remain in constant tension.
- SSayla Mass(VA: Megumi Han)
Sayla provides the story’s essential moral counterweight, responding to displacement and political violence with a markedly different form of resilience from her brother.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
Sunrise combines detailed hand-drawn character acting with prominent CG vehicles and mechanical combat; even reviewers critical of the series consistently singled out its action set pieces and convincing computer-generated machinery.
- 2
Yoshikazu Yasuhiko serves as both chief director and character designer, giving the adaptation unusual visual continuity with the manga and with his foundational work on the Universal Century.
- 3
Mechanical design is divided among Hajime Katoki, Kimitoshi Yamane, and Mika Akitaka, producing a broad industrial vocabulary that covers tanks and transitional military hardware as carefully as mobile suits.
- 4
The six installments prioritize conspiracy, state formation, and military escalation over a conventional pilot-centered campaign, placing The Origin closer to a historical space opera than a standard robot serial.
- 5
The first four episodes form the more acclaimed character-focused section, while episodes five and six shift toward connecting the prequel material with the original Mobile Suit Gundam; critics found that bridge visually impressive but less dramatically essential.
Fun Facts & Trivia
- Fun fact 1
- The production credits all three foundational Gundam creator names: Yoshiyuki Tomino, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, and Sunrise’s collective studio pen name Hajime Yatate.
- Fun fact 2
- Yasuhiko occupied three major creative positions on the anime—original creator, chief director, and character designer—an unusually direct level of authorial control for a modern franchise adaptation.
- Fun fact 3
- The six episodes were released from February 28, 2015 to May 5, 2018, spreading a compact story across more than three years rather than following a normal television broadcast schedule.
- Fun fact 4
- The anime adapts the prequel sections of Yasuhiko’s Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga rather than serving as a straightforward remake of the complete 1979 television narrative.
- Fun fact 5
- Its placement in a viewing order remains contentious: critics and longtime fans often recommend watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam first because The Origin assumes familiarity and makes continuity choices that can reshape a newcomer’s expectations.
