Synopsis

Naomi Katagaki and Ruri Ichigyou couldn’t seem more different at first glance. Naomi is quiet and hesitant, while Ruri’s blunt, icy demeanor leaves many classmates keeping their distance. Yet a shared love of books becomes common ground, slowly bringing them into each other’s orbit.

As they grow closer, Naomi begins to see past Ruri’s intimidating reputation and discovers a gentler side. His feelings deepen, and when he finally confesses, Ruri returns his affection—until everything changes when she is struck by lightning and falls into a coma. Determined to see her smile again, Naomi sets out to bring her back to the life they were just beginning to share, whatever it takes.

Otaku Consensus

Another World earns a measured positive verdict: its 7.09 MAL score and 68/100 AniList score reflect a niche but receptive audience drawn to Tomohiko Itou’s controlled direction, Graphinica’s full-CGI sci-fi presentation, and the unusual decision to compress romantic escalation into a three-episode format. Its most persistent weakness is that same compression; the short run gives the concept momentum, but it leaves little room for the emotional aftershocks to breathe.

Why You Should Watch

Watch Another World if you want sci-fi romance built around mood, regret, and technological possibility without committing to a full cour. It scratches a nearby itch to Hello World and the more relationship-driven side of Steins;Gate: not because it has the same scale, but because it treats affection as something that can collide with systems, records, and futures. The appeal is its concentration: three episodes, no filler structure, and a visual identity shaped by Graphinica’s full-CGI approach rather than standard TV-anime softness. Viewers who like quiet character friction, kuudere dynamics, and compact speculative stories will get the most from it; viewers who need long relationship development may find the format too abrupt.

Key Characters

  • N
    Naomi Katagaki

Naomi stands out as a restrained sci-fi romance lead whose hesitation becomes interesting because the story pressures him into decisions rather than letting him remain purely passive.

  • R
    Ruri Ichigyou

Ruri is framed through the kuudere appeal identified by AniList users, but her draw is the contrast between social frostiness and the literary sensitivity that makes her feel specific rather than archetypal.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

Graphinica handled the animation, and AniList users tag the series as Full CGI at 73%, making it a rare case of a short-form romantic sci-fi anime leaning visibly into CG rather than hiding it behind conventional 2D presentation.

  • 2

The series is only three episodes long and aired from September 13 to October 4, 2019, so its structure functions more like a concentrated sci-fi romance module than a seasonal television arc.

  • 3

Tomohiko Itou directs, bringing a genre-seasoned hand to a story that depends on tension, timing, and emotional escalation rather than action volume.

  • 4

Yukiko Horiguchi is credited with character design, giving the project a notable design pedigree for a compact ONA-scale production.

  • 5

Its database profile is unusually narrow: MAL lists it under Sci-Fi with no additional themes, while AniList highlights Full CGI and Kuudere as the defining user-facing tags.
