Synopsis
In a gritty underworld where loyalty and ambition intertwine, Eishin Kuga, known for his fierce temperament and violent tendencies, finds himself at the center of a power struggle. Yashiro, a seasoned member of the yakuza, observes the chaos, hoping his long-time friend can rein in Kuga's reckless behavior. The arrival of Kanji Kageyama, a skilled underground doctor, adds another layer to the unfolding drama as he is tasked with temporarily sheltering the headstrong newcomer.
Despite Kageyama's firm declarations of his disinterest in men, he quickly discovers that Kuga's bold demeanor and playful provocations challenge his resolve. As their paths intertwine within the complexities of organized crime, both men must navigate their own feelings and the turbulent world around them, leading to unexpected revelations and deepening connections.
Otaku Consensus
Kaori Makita’s restrained direction and Hiroshi Seko’s economical script turn Kuga and Kageyama’s chemistry into a compact, unusually adult blend of volatility, tenderness, and erotic tension. Its sensuality and lighter emotional temperature make it a rewarding companion to The Clouds Gather, although the loose plotting and reliance on prior franchise familiarity leave it feeling slight as a standalone work.
Why You Should Watch
If you want adult boys’ love without a school setting, coy romantic subtext, or a season-long wait for emotional payoff, Don’t Stay Gold delivers its attraction with unusual directness. It scratches some of the criminal-underworld itch of Banana Fish, but its focus is narrower, more intimate, and considerably more sensual; compared with the heavier The Clouds Gather, it is also warmer and less tragic. The appeal lies in watching two forceful personalities test boundaries through clipped exchanges, teasing, and physical tension rather than conventional courtship. Hiroki Yasumoto’s grounded performance keeps Kageyama from becoming a simple straight-man archetype, while Yuuki Ono makes Kuga’s provocations feel both playful and dangerous. Watch The Clouds Gather first: this OVA works best as relationship expansion and tonal counterpoint, not as an independent franchise introduction.
Key Characters
- KKanji Kageyama(VA: Hiroki Yasumoto)
Hiroki Yasumoto’s measured, low-key delivery makes Kageyama an effective emotional anchor, with small cracks in his composure carrying more weight than overt declarations.
- EEishin Kuga(VA: Yuuki Ono)
Yuuki Ono gives Kuga’s confrontational charisma a seductive unpredictability, shifting fluidly between teasing confidence and the volatility behind his “Mad Dog” reputation.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
Rather than extending the franchise’s central Yashiro–Doumeki storyline, the single-episode OVA concentrates on Kuga and Kageyama, providing the relational foundation only glimpsed in The Clouds Gather.
- 2
Studio GRIZZLY presents a noticeably more relaxed and intimate register than the franchise’s principal film, a contrast reviewers praised for making the pairing feel sweet and passionate without abandoning the adult criminal milieu.
- 3
Hiroshi Seko’s script favors charged conversation and interpersonal escalation over an elaborate standalone plot. That economy strengthens the chemistry, though it also explains why viewers commonly describe the story as loose.
- 4
Character-design duties were shared by Akiko Kumada and Tsuyoshi Kuwahara, while Chikako Kamata’s color design and Mitsuhiro Satou’s photography shaped the OVA’s visual finish.
- 5
Its combination of an adult cast, openly LGBTQ+ subject matter, an age-gap dynamic, and acknowledged nudity places it well outside the coy, youth-oriented conventions common to animated boys’ love.
