Synopsis
Funiculì funiculà is a captivating musical piece that takes inspiration from the beloved Neapolitan song composed by Luigi Denza in the 1880s, which celebrated the launch of the first funicular railway on Mount Vesuvius. The Japanese adaptation, titled Tozandensha (Mountain Railway), was performed by Duke Aces and first aired in April 1961 on NHK's Minna no Uta program. This rendition was unique for its accompanying shadow play, crafted by the Kakashiza Shadow Play Theatre, though it has since become a piece of lost media.
In June 1970, the Hibarigaoka Boys and Girls Choir presented a performance of the original song, also featured on the Minna no Uta program. This version was brought to life through the imaginative animation of Hal Fukushima, enriching the song's emotional resonance and showcasing the artistic synergy between music and visual storytelling.
