Blood and Heart: The Legendary Life of a Japanese Youth in China

Blood and Heart: The Legendary Life of a Japanese Youth in China" chronicles the remarkable journey of Megumi Sunahara, a soldier of Japanese descent serving in the Chinese People's Liberation Army. Born in Kyushu, Japan, in 1933, Megumi's life took a dramatic turn when he relocated to Northeast China with his family during his childhood. Following Japan's defeat in World War II, he found himself unable to return home, ultimately living under the care of a local landlord in Liaoning while tending to cattle.

In 1948, Megumi embraced a new identity as "Zhang Rongqing" and enlisted in the PLA, where he became an integral part of significant military campaigns, including the Liaoshen and Pingjin operations. His dedication to the revolutionary cause saw him actively participate in pivotal battles throughout the Chinese Civil War and the Korean War, providing a unique perspective on the intersections of identity, loyalty, and the tumult of a transformative era in history.
