Synopsis

When three high school girls—spirited Hikaru Shidou, proud Umi Ryuuzaki, and kind-hearted Fuu Hououji—meet at Tokyo Tower, they are unexpectedly whisked away to a fantastical realm in response to a desperate plea for help. Here, they encounter Guru Clef, a youthful figure who reveals their destiny as the legendary Magic Knights summoned by Princess Emeraude to rescue the enchanted world of Cephiro from impending doom.

While Hikaru is eager to embrace the adventure, her companions yearn for a swift return home. However, their journey is bound to the fate of Cephiro; they must confront the formidable Lord Zagato and rescue the princess to regain their freedom. Armed with powerful magical abilities and protective armor bestowed by Clef, the trio embarks on a quest that will lead them to encounter ancient beings known as Rune Gods. With the guidance of the whimsical Mokona and the skilled weaponsmith Presea, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu must navigate challenges and grow into the heroes they are destined to become, all while facing the darkness threatening to engulf their new home.

Otaku Consensus

Yui Miura and E&H Production make the revival’s case through polished visual direction and a modernized CLAMP aesthetic, the element most consistently praised in early fan reaction. Anime News Network’s preview also finds the manga fidelity unusually persuasive, giving the series the confident, storybook cadence of an older shoujo adaptation rather than a trend-chasing reboot. That fidelity is also its main friction point: the bygone-era pacing and absence of contemporary isekai machinery can feel dated to viewers accustomed to faster, system-driven fantasy.

Why You Should Watch

If you want portal fantasy without level screens, skill menus, or a self-insert power ladder, this revival offers a rarer lineage: shoujo adventure built from transformation imagery, medieval questing, and super-robot spectacle. It scratches the same cross-genre itch as The Vision of Escaflowne, with some of Sailor Moon’s team chemistry, but CLAMP’s design language and chibi punctuation give it a distinct visual rhythm. E&H Production’s update preserves the elegant aesthetic readers recognize while using contemporary color, compositing, and CG support rather than sanding it into a generic remake. The three leads bring genuinely different energies—Hikaru’s forward momentum, Umi’s proud resistance, and Fuu’s measured warmth—so the ensemble is the attraction, not a single overpowered avatar. Choose it for old-school isekai architecture presented with 2026 polish, not for modern game mechanics.

Key Characters

  • H
    Hikaru Shidou(VA: Ayane Sakura)

Hikaru’s tomboyish enthusiasm makes her the trio’s emotional accelerator, with Ayane Sakura cast to carry its most openly heroic energy.

  • U
    Umi Ryuuzaki(VA: Rumi Ookubo)

Umi turns pride, impatience, and ojou-sama poise into productive friction, preventing the central team from becoming uniformly agreeable.

  • F
    Fuu Hououji(VA: Rie Takahashi)

Fuu is the group’s warm, measured counterweight, pairing a gentle disposition with the precision-oriented identity of its archer.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

E&H Production modernizes CLAMP’s recognizable character aesthetic without discarding it; early viewer discussion specifically singled out the visuals and the successful update of the original art style.

  • 2

Anime News Network praised the adaptation for adhering closely to the manga, treating fidelity as a creative strength rather than radically restructuring the material for contemporary isekai trends.

  • 3

Its genre construction combines shoujo transformation language, chibi comedy, medieval fantasy, and super-robot imagery—a combination far removed from the statistics-and-skills template associated with newer isekai.

  • 4

The visual pipeline has clearly assigned specialists: Kazumaru Andou handles art direction, Chiho Nakamura oversees color design, Hitoshi Tamura directs photography, and Tomohiko Kan leads CG.

  • 5

The principal trio is voiced by Ayane Sakura, Rumi Ookubo, and Rie Takahashi, giving the remake three established contemporary performers rather than reproducing the earlier adaptation’s cast.

Fun Facts & Trivia
