Synopsis
Nestled by a serene lakeshore in the heart of an ancient forest, a quaint cottage is home to a witch named Rose, who is as enchanting as she is misunderstood. While most townsfolk regard her with a mix of fear and intrigue, Rose is simply a young woman devoted to the craft of potion-making, a skill passed down from her wise grandmother. Despite her secluded existence, she carries a secret yearning in her heart for a dashing knight she once glimpsed: Sir Harij Azm.
After four long years of unrequited feelings, Rose is taken aback when Harij arrives at her door, seeking her expertise in creating a love potion. However, her hopes are dashed when she learns that he is in pursuit of another's affections. Determined to assist him while grappling with her own heartbreak, Rose concocts a plan that involves sending Harij on a whimsical series of quests to gather the potion's ingredients. Each task becomes a chance for the two to bond, allowing Rose to relish their moments together while navigating the bittersweet reality of her unspoken love.
Otaku Consensus
Keizō Kusakawa’s direction gives this light-novel adaptation an assured opening, using expressive reactions, domestic detail, and visual contrast rather than explanatory dialogue to establish Rose and Harij’s personalities. Diomedéa’s polished premiere and the leads’ restrained chemistry have drawn the strongest praise, while the chief early reservation is that Harij’s reason for requesting the potion remains deliberately withheld, leaving the central dramatic engine dependent on a mystery the series has not yet paid off.
Why You Should Watch
Watch this if you want an adult-leaning fantasy romance built on awkward observation and practical acts of care rather than rapid confessions, love-triangle theatrics, or action-heavy worldbuilding. Rose’s potion craft gives the courtship a tactile rhythm of ingredients, medicine, and routine, while Keizō Kusakawa’s direction lets cluttered rooms, pauses, and uncomfortable glances communicate what the leads refuse to say. It scratches part of the same itch as Snow White with the Red Hair’s craft-minded romance and The Apothecary Diaries’ fascination with remedies, but trades palace intrigue for rural isolation and intimate two-person tension. Mikako Komatsu and Youhei Azakami are especially well matched: her flustered inwardness meets his blunt delivery without turning either lead into a stock romantic obstacle.
Key Characters
- HHarij Azm(VA: Youhei Azakami)
Harij’s severe manner is complicated by quietly observant behavior, and Youhei Azakami makes the gap between his abrasive words and gentler intent central to his appeal.
- RRose(VA: Mikako Komatsu)
Rose is a socially withdrawn craftswoman whose romantic panic, professional discipline, and neglected domestic habits give Mikako Komatsu room for both understated vulnerability and comic timing.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
The premiere’s most praised directorial choice is its reliance on visual characterization: Harij’s response to Rose’s dusty living conditions is conveyed through behavior and framing rather than an explicit speech about her isolation.
- 2
Diomedéa separates the romance from grand fantasy spectacle, concentrating its animation on facial reactions, pauses, and the physical business of potion-making; early viewers specifically singled out the first episode’s presentation as polished.
- 3
Series composer Wataru Watari organizes the ingredient-gathering tasks as recurring opportunities for incremental character contact, giving the romance an episodic courtship structure instead of rushing toward a declaration.
- 4
The rural lakeside setting is shaped by art director Scott MacDonald, art designer Maho Takahashi, color designer Yuki Hayashi, and photography director Hiroaki Asano, with Rose’s secluded cottage functioning as a visual measure of how far she has withdrawn from ordinary society.
- 5
The series carries strong josei positioning in AniList’s tagging, while its emphasis on medicine, a hikikomori-coded heroine, and heterosexual romance distinguishes it from school-based romantic comedies.
