Synopsis
Set against the backdrop of 1866, during the waning days of the Tokugawa shogunate, Kumosuke Haguregumo is a retired samurai who embraces a life of indulgence, seemingly indifferent to the sweeping changes around him. Known as the town's fool, he spends his days in leisure—smoking, drinking, and chasing after women—while rarely returning home before sunrise. His carefree lifestyle stands in stark contrast to the responsibilities awaiting him at home, where his devoted wife and two children, Shinnosuke and Ohana, grapple with the consequences of his reckless behavior.
As Shinnosuke matures, he begins to seek his own path in a world rife with uncertainty. Struggling under the weight of his father's disreputable legacy, he strives to forge a life grounded in honor. The challenges he faces reflect the internal and external conflicts of a society on the brink of transformation, as various warriors and citizens alike grapple with their identities in a rapidly evolving Japan.
