Synopsis

Raul’s younger sister travels all the way from their hometown, eager to reunite with the brother she believes has “become a hero.” Her visit puts Raul in an awkward spot, especially with the truth far less heroic than the rumor.

To keep her from being disappointed, Raul and his coworkers decide it would be easier to maintain the illusion—working together to convince her that Raul really is the hero she came to see.

Otaku Consensus

This OVA works best as a compact after-hours bonus for Yusibu rather than a standalone fantasy comedy: asread. leans on the TV series’ strongest mix of workplace farce, ecchi escalation, and Raul’s lingering anxiety over the hero life he never got. The sibling-centered material gives the episode more emotional shape than a disposable fanservice special, but fan response remains modest at 6.75 on MAL, with the clearest complaint being that some OVA-only choices feel stranger and less cleanly judged than the main season’s lighter comedy.

Why You Should Watch

Watch this if you like fantasy settings that care more about retail shifts, awkward adult responsibilities, and workplace group improv than demon-slaying spectacle. The OVA scratches a similar itch to the office-comedy side of The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, but with Yusibu’s louder ecchi timing and a more shameless “everyone in the store commits to the bit” energy. It is especially suited for viewers who already enjoyed the 2013 TV series and want one more character-driven gag episode with Raul, Fino, and Miuri rather than a lore-heavy continuation. If you want a short, low-commitment extra that packages post-hero disappointment, sibling expectations, and store-staff chaos into a single 2014 bonus episode, this is the franchise’s most concentrated serving.

Key Characters

  • F
    Fino Bloodstone(VA: Azusa Tadokoro)

Fino remains the franchise’s comic wildcard, giving the OVA its sharpest contrast between fantasy royalty baggage and the rhythms of ordinary customer-service life.

  • M
    Miuri Chaser(VA: Aya Uchida)

Miuri’s presence reframes Raul through family expectations, making her less a side visitor than a pressure test for the identity he presents to people back home.

  • R
    Raul Chaser(VA: Keisuke Koumoto)

Raul is interesting because the comedy keeps attacking the exact wound the main series built around him: being trained for heroic glory and forced to find dignity in a normal job.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

The OVA was released after the Fall 2013 TV run, airing on March 7, 2014, which positions it as a bonus coda rather than a new arc or sequel season.

  • 2

asread. keeps the franchise anchored in adult-cast workplace comedy, a specific lane within fantasy anime where the punchline is often scheduling, customer service, or professional embarrassment rather than battle power.

  • 3

The episode uses a single-situation farce structure: Raul’s coworkers collectively perform around a false public image, which lets the store ensemble drive the comedy instead of relying on new fantasy antagonists.

  • 4

Its reception sits in the “for existing fans” zone: a 6.75 MAL score from 24,720 votes and a #6345 rank suggest viewers found it watchable but far from essential.

  • 5

The most noted tonal split is the same one identified by user reviews: it offers the expected lighthearted comedy and ecchi store antics, but includes choices that some viewers found unusually awkward compared with the TV season.
