Akane-banashi

Akane Ousaki grew up captivated by rakugo, the traditional Japanese art of comedic storytelling, as she watched her father, Tooru, rehearse and perform. In the rakugo world, performers rise through three ranks, with the coveted title of shinuchi reserved for those who pass a demanding promotion exam. When Tooru takes that test, Akane sees him deliver an outstanding performance before a large audience and the judging panel—only for the stern head judge, Isshou Arakawa, to deny his promotion, pushing him to abandon rakugo altogether.

Determined not to let that moment be the end of the story, Akane throws herself into training. By her final year of high school, a chance opportunity—made possible through Shiguma Arakawa, Tooru’s former mentor—puts her onstage before a real crowd. Her performance turns heads, and Shiguma soon takes her on as his apprentice, setting Akane on a path toward the shinuchi rank she aims to achieve in her father’s stead.
