Synopsis
Set a few months after the events of *Steins;Gate*, Rintarou Okabe and the rest of the lab members travel to the United States alongside their acquaintance Faris NyanNyan, who’s taking part in a Rai-Net battle event.
During the trip, they reunite with Kurisu Makise. Troubled by dreamlike flashes that feel like pieces of other world lines, Kurisu presses Okabe for the truth—especially about the moments the two of them shared—and whether those memories reflect events that truly occurred.
Otaku Consensus
Egoistic Poriomania is received as one of the cleaner anime-original Steins;Gate add-ons: White Fox keeps the TV series’ snap timing for chuuni comedy while giving the Okabe–Kurisu relationship a warmer, more explicit epilogue than the main ending allowed. Critics and fans praise its pacing as compact and its romantic beats as earned rather than ornamental, with the common criticism being that its slice-of-life looseness makes it feel less essential than the series’ thriller arcs.
Why You Should Watch
Watch Egoistic Poriomania if you want Steins;Gate’s emotional hangover treated as character comedy and romantic aftercare rather than another labyrinthine conspiracy. It is especially satisfying for viewers who felt the TV finale left too much unsaid between Okabe and Kurisu: the OVA uses awkward silences, phone theatrics, and tsundere friction as the real battleground. It scratches the same itch as a good post-series special from shows like Toradora! or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, where the pleasure is seeing beloved personalities recalibrate after the “big story” has ended. The U.S. setting also lets the cast’s otaku habits, maid-café energy, and language-barrier jokes bounce against a different backdrop without diluting the sci-fi aftertaste.
Key Characters
- RRintarou Okabe
Okabe remains compelling because his theatrical chuunibyou persona now has to coexist with a quieter, more emotionally accountable version of himself.
- KKurisu Makise
Kurisu’s appeal here comes from the tension between her sharp tsundere defenses and her insistence on confronting feelings and memories that do not fit neatly into rational explanation.
- FFaris NyanNyan
Faris brings the OVA its most overt otaku-culture texture, turning Rai-Net and maid-inflected performance into more than background flavor.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
The OVA functions as an anime-only epilogue rather than a direct visual-novel route adaptation, which gives it permission to prioritize closure, comedy timing, and relationship texture over mystery escalation.
- 2
White Fox preserves the TV series’ contrast between deadpan direction and exaggerated character performance, a key reason reviewers singled out the special’s comedy as feeling consistent with the main run.
- 3
The staff continuity is unusually strong for a one-episode special: Hiroshi Hamasaki and Takuya Satou remain credited as chief directors, with Jukki Hanada on series composition and Kyuuta Sakai handling character design.
- 4
Its AniList tag profile is unusually revealing for an OVA: Heterosexual at 91%, Tsundere at 90%, Chuunibyou at 77%, Foreign at 68%, and Language Barrier at 31% point to a special built around interpersonal friction as much as time-travel residue.
- 5
The episode’s reputation rests on a specific tonal blend: reviewers repeatedly cite both “extremely funny” comedy and “cute romantic moments,” making it one of the franchise extras most associated with emotional payoff rather than lore expansion.
