Ryouma Echizen, one of 50 nationally ranked middle school tennis players, earns an invitation to Japan’s U-17 training camp—an elite program once reserved for high schoolers preparing for the upcoming U-17 World Cup. Their arrival immediately stirs resentment among the older players, and early clashes show just how formidable the newcomers are before the coaches step in to restore order.

The camp’s structure is strict: competitors are assigned to one of 16 courts according to ability, with Court 1 reserved for the top tier. Daily “shuffle matches” determine who rises and who falls through the ranks. When the middle schoolers are told to pair up, they expect doubles—only to be matched against their own partners in a tiebreak-style showdown where victory means staying to train, and defeat means being sent home. With every point carrying consequences, bonds are tested as the rivalry between middle and high school players grows into something more complicated than simply surviving the camp.
