Hikaru no Go

Hikaru Shindou’s ordinary day takes a strange turn when he finds an old go board in his grandfather’s attic. The moment he touches it, a disembodied voice speaks to him—and when Hikaru comes to, the presence remains. The voice belongs to Fujiwara no Sai, a spirit from the Heian Era who once taught go to the Japanese Emperor. Bound to the board and driven by an enduring love for the game, Sai longs to pursue an elusive, “divine” style of play, using Hikaru as his hands on the board.

At first, Hikaru has little interest in go and plays only under Sai’s guidance. But meeting Akira Touya, a talented young prodigy, sparks something new: curiosity, competitiveness, and a growing desire to improve. With Sai’s experience and Akira’s challenge pushing him forward, Hikaru steps into the disciplined world of go and begins finding a path of his own.
