Cinque Izumi, Nanami Takatsuki, and Rebecca Anderson are called back to the continent of Flonyard, where the Biscotti Republic, Galette, and Pastilage normally settle rivalries through friendly war games. Cinque serves as Biscotti’s hero, Nanami—his cousin—represents Galette, and Rebecca, a close friend of Cinque, fights for Pastilage.

The story opens in the human world as Rebecca readies her return from Japan, while Cinque and Nanami travel from England toward Biscotti and Galette. A sudden run of misfortune—punctuated by a lightning strike—throws them off course and into the Dragon Forest, where they’re sheltered by the Dragon Priestess Sharu. Her warning is far less playful than the usual games: demons are threatening the forest, and possibly all of Flonyard, raising the stakes beyond anything the three nations are used to facing.
