Toue Inc. purchased Japan’s Midorijima with the ambition of creating Platinum Jail, a lavish “utopia” reserved for the world’s richest residents. The island’s original population was pushed into the Old Residential District, and once Platinum Jail was completed, they were left behind and largely forgotten.

Life on Midorijima revolves around two popular games: Rib, an old-fashioned gang turf battle, and Rhyme, a high-tech virtual reality combat contest. Rhyme requires an All-Mate—an AI companion that often resembles a pet—and matches are overseen by an Usui. Aoba Seragaki wants nothing to do with either pastime, content to live quietly with his grandmother and his All-Mate, Ren. That calm breaks when he’s forcibly pulled into a perilous Rhyme match, and whispers spread about Rib players vanishing—shattering any hope he had of an ordinary life.
