On the sweltering afternoon of August 14, shut-in Shintarou Kisaragi is pushed out of his room for the first time in two years after an argument with Ene—the cyber girl living inside his computer—ends with soda spilled across his keyboard. With most shops closed for the Obon festival, the search for a replacement forces him to brave a trip to the local department store, a prospect that leaves him deeply uneasy despite his dependence on his PC.

Fate has other plans: the moment Shintarou steps outside, he’s swept into a frightening hostage incident—only to be rescued by the Mekakushi Dan, a group of teenagers who possess enigmatic eye-related powers. Pulled into their ranks alongside Ene, Shintarou begins to see how each ability fits together like part of a larger puzzle, and as the group’s histories surface, the hidden truth linking them gradually comes into view.
