After her father burns through the family fortune and disappears, Kanae Otowa is left alone in the Otowa family’s old mansion, Otowakan, staring down foreclosure and a mountain of debt. Determined to clear out the last holdouts, she tries to evict her friend Sousuke Kagura and two baffling newcomers who insist they once knew her father: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven—now inexplicably alive again and answering to the nicknames “Motes” and “Beethes,” despite spending their days on plenty of foolish pursuits that have little to do with music.

Beethes’ refusal to move out leads to the discovery of “Musik,” a strange power that prevents Otowakan from being torn down and buys Kanae some time. The mansion soon becomes a gathering point for other Musik users, including Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, and Franz Schubert—though their arrival also hints at trouble, as not everyone drawn to Musik has harmless intentions. Elsewhere in the city, Johann Sebastian Bach watches from atop a high building, quietly preparing to put his own Musik to use.
