Anita King, Maggie Mui, and Michelle Cheung—known as the Paper Sisters—operate the Three Sisters Detective Agency in Hong Kong, taking on investigations that revolve around books. They’re hired to escort Japanese novelist Nenene Sumiregawa, who has been stuck in a creative slump since the disappearance of her close friend, Yomiko Readman. All three sisters are Paper Masters with the ability to manipulate paper, and those powers prove vital when terrorists target Nenene during a book signing.

To prevent another attack, the sisters stay on in Japan as Nenene’s bodyguards while continuing their unusual brand of detective work under the direction of a shadowy organization called Dokusensha. Maggie and Michelle are thrilled to be near their favorite author, but Anita—despite her own paper-based abilities—can’t stand books, adding friction to their new routine. As the cases deepen, the sisters begin uncovering connections between Nenene, Yomiko’s disappearance, and the enigmatic books Dokusensha assigns them to pursue, turning a straightforward job into their most dangerous mystery yet.
