Modest Heroes

*Modest Heroes* presents three standalone tales about everyday courage in very different forms. In “Kanini & Kanino,” two tiny, anthropomorphized freshwater crab siblings live quietly in a forest stream with their father while their mother remains above the surface to give birth. When a violent storm sweeps their father away downstream, Kanini and Kanino venture out alone to find him, facing peril in the currents where a flesh-eating piranha could be lurking behind any rock.

“Samurai Egg” follows Shun, a boy whose life-threatening egg allergy turns even a small taste into agony. Under constant supervision and with a mother worn down by repeated close calls, Shun gradually learns—through persistence and hard lessons—how to keep living in a world where eggs are everywhere. In “Invisible,” an unseen man anchors himself each day with clothing and the weight of a fire extinguisher, moving through life unnoticed despite his efforts to connect. During a severe storm, an encounter with a gentle blind person offers a rare chance at being understood, and a hint of meaning in his solitude.
