Ichigo Momomiya heads into high school hoping for a fresh start—and maybe a first love. She quickly finds herself drawn to Masaya Aoyama, a well-liked classmate with a strong interest in environmental causes. When Ichigo gets tickets to an exhibition on endangered animals, she uses the opportunity to ask him out.

The date takes a sudden turn when a strange light knocks Ichigo unconscious. She wakes up seemingly fine, but danger erupts in the form of a massive rat-like creature that injures Masaya. Desperate to protect him, Ichigo discovers she can transform and fight with cat-like abilities.

After the battle, researchers Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka reveal the truth: Ichigo has been recruited into the Mew Project, a team of five magical girls infused with the DNA of endangered species. With alien-infected beings known as Chimera Anima appearing more frequently, Ichigo must help gather the remaining members and stop the looming threat before it spreads further.
