Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Yuuta Okkotsu can’t escape the violent incidents that follow him. Shy and frequently bullied, he’s bound to a terrifying curse that lashes out with brutal force—Rika Orimoto, a lingering presence tied to a tragedy from his childhood and a danger to anyone who crosses him.

Yuuta’s case draws the attention of Satoru Gojou, a formidable jujutsu sorcerer and teacher at Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School. Believing Yuuta’s power can be guided rather than feared, Gojou brings him into the school, where Yuuta struggles to find his footing alongside first-years Toge Inumaki, Maki Zenin, and Panda.

As Yuuta joins missions and awkwardly learns to work with Rika’s overwhelming strength, the destruction left in its wake attracts the notice of Suguru Getou, a curse user intent on seizing that power. With Getou pursuing a plan to wipe out non-sorcerers, Yuuta and his classmates are forced into a fight that tests the bonds they’ve begun to form.

Otaku Consensus

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is widely received as a high-value prequel rather than franchise filler, with MAPPA and director Seong-Hu Park turning a short source manga into a tightly paced theatrical action drama that strengthens the main series instead of detouring from it. Critics and fans consistently praise its faithful adaptation, added connective material, and Yuuta Okkotsu’s cleaner emotional arc; the common caveat is that the manga’s compact structure can still make parts of the supporting cast feel abbreviated.

Why You Should Watch

Watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 if you want a canon anime film that actually matters to its parent series without requiring a season’s worth of recap beforehand. It scratches the same itch as Demon Slayer: Mugen Train in the sense that the movie format is used for concentrated battle-shounen escalation, but its hook is more intimate: curse horror, school training, and a wounded lead whose power feels less like a gift than a liability. Viewers who found Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 crowded may appreciate how this prequel narrows the focus around Yuuta, Gojou, Getou, Maki, Toge, and Panda. MAPPA’s action direction leans into impact, speed, and body-horror grotesquerie, making it ideal for fans who want supernatural combat with emotional consequence rather than a disposable side adventure.

Key Characters

  • Y
    Yuuta Okkotsu

Yuuta stands out from the usual battle-shounen rookie because his appeal comes from fear, guilt, and restraint before confidence, giving the film a more wounded center than the main series’ opening stretch.

  • R
    Rika Orimoto

Rika is memorable because the film treats her as both a horror presence and an emotional anchor, making her more than a simple power source.

  • S
    Satoru Gojou

Gojou’s role here sharpens the teacher side of his persona, showing why his faith in unstable students is not just comic swagger.

  • S
    Suguru Getou

Getou gives the movie its ideological bite, functioning as a charismatic antagonist whose worldview directly pressures the jujutsu society the main series keeps expanding.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

MAPPA produced the film as a single theatrical prequel rather than a recap or non-canon side story, which is why reviewers often single it out as adding value to the larger Jujutsu Kaisen narrative.

  • 2

Director Seong-Hu Park keeps the adaptation close to Gege Akutami’s manga while using added scenes to smooth out material that readers often describe as brief on the page.

  • 3

The film’s structure makes it an unusually clean entry point: web reviews repeatedly note that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 works before the TV series because it was built from pre-main-series source material.

  • 4

Its horror texture is not cosmetic; AniList’s high tags for Curses, Tragedy, Body Horror, Gore, Exorcism, and Urban Fantasy reflect how the movie blends school-battle training with uglier supernatural imagery.

  • 5

The production credits show a design-heavy pipeline, with Tadashi Hiramatsu on character design and Terumi Nishii, Sayaka Koiso, and Takako Shimizu credited for sub character design, supporting a film packed with distinct sorcerer and curse silhouettes.
