Synopsis

Park Hyung Suk endures a brutal routine of insults, humiliation, and violence at school. Overweight and lacking confidence, he becomes an easy target and can only dream of disappearing. Hoping for a fresh start, he transfers to a new high school—only to wake up to an impossible change: he now has a second body, tall, handsome, and unusually athletic. Before long, he discovers the rule behind it—when one body falls asleep, he opens his eyes in the other.

With his new appearance, Hyung Suk steps into school life from the opposite side of the social ladder, but the attention brings its own problems. Admired for his looks yet treated superficially, and challenged by jealous delinquents looking for a fight, he finds that popularity doesn’t mean peace. Juggling two bodies and two daily lives, he’s forced to confront how quickly people judge—and how hard it is to escape trouble no matter what face he wears.

Otaku Consensus

Lookism lands best as a compact webtoon adaptation with sharp social-dramatic instincts: its eight-episode pacing, character growth, and Studio Mir’s willingness to stage school conflict as both humiliation and action give it more bite than a simple glow-up fantasy. The split reception is equally clear: admirers rate it far above its MAL 7.36 average for emotional payoff and fun, while detractors repeatedly point to awkward CG/rotoscope-like animation and source-material omissions such as Mary’s absence.

Why You Should Watch

Watch Lookism if you want a school action-drama about status, image, bullying, and masculinity without committing to a long shounen run. Its appeal sits between the social pressure-cooker of a delinquent series like Tokyo Revengers and the body-identity hook of a supernatural drama, but it keeps the focus on everyday cruelty rather than world-saving stakes. Studio Mir’s version is especially easy to sample: eight episodes, a single 2022 drop, and a pace that gets from classroom power dynamics to fights, fashion, work, dancing, and gang-adjacent trouble quickly. The rough edges are visible, especially in the CG-heavy moments, but the series has enough emotional directness and webtoon energy to make its popularity understandable.

Key Characters

  • P
    Park Hyung Suk

Hyung Suk is compelling because the series turns him into a living test case for how differently the same person is treated when confidence, beauty, and social permission suddenly align.

  • L
    Lee Eun Tae

Known to fans as Vasco, Lee Eun Tae gives the school violence a moral counterweight through a delinquent-coded presence that is less cynical than his appearance suggests.

  • P
    Pyeon Deok Hwa

Deok Hwa stands out as the adaptation’s clearest reminder that talent and dignity can be ignored when a classroom decides someone does not fit its visual hierarchy.

  • H
    Hong Jae Yeol

Jay is a fan-favorite because his quiet, fashion-forward presence communicates loyalty and class tension with very little exposition.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

Studio Mir handles the animation, making Lookism part of the growing wave of Korean webtoon properties adapted outside the traditional Japanese studio pipeline.

  • 2

The opening theme is performed by ATEEZ, giving the series a distinctly K-pop-adjacent identity rather than treating the Korean setting as interchangeable school-anime scenery.

  • 3

The season is structurally lean: all eight episodes are tied to a single listed air date, December 8, 2022, which makes the adaptation feel closer to a binge-format mini-series than a weekly cour.

  • 4

Its genre mix is unusually specific for a school drama: AniList tags it not only with Body Swapping at 93% and Bullying at 91%, but also Martial Arts, Dancing, Gangs, Work, and Fashion, reflecting how many youth-culture arenas the story moves through.

  • 5

The animation itself became one of the main reception fault lines, with reviewers calling out bizarre-looking CG or rotoscope-like movement even when they praised the character development.
