Synopsis
In a perilous competition, sixteen Magical Girls find themselves thrust into a ruthless game where survival is the ultimate prize. Each girl is equipped with a Magical Phone that transports them every three days into a dynamic RPG-inspired world, where they must band together to confront formidable foes, tackle intricate puzzles, and collect Magical Candy to progress. The stakes are high, as a staggering reward of ten billion yen awaits the one who delivers the final blow to their enemies.
As the pressure mounts and the promise of riches looms, the camaraderie among the girls begins to fray, revealing the darker side of their ambitions. With the threat of defeat looming large—where losing means far more than just game over—trust becomes a rare commodity. In this treacherous environment, alliances shift and betrayals become inevitable, making survival a game of both skill and strategy.
Otaku Consensus
Hiroyuki Hashimoto’s brisk direction and Takao Yoshioka’s adaptation successfully distinguish Restart from its predecessor by widening the franchise’s world and treating its magical girls as experienced operators rather than genre newcomers. Its fast escalation and game-driven paranoia are effective, but the crowded introduction and action scenes frequently lack the physical impact needed to make each crisis land. The divided early response is reflected in provisional scores of 6.46 on MyAnimeList and 57/100 on AniList.
Why You Should Watch
Watch Restart if you want the suspicion and rule-lawyering of Danganronpa fused with the corrupted magical-girl imagery of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, but with veteran heroines rather than novices discovering the genre’s trapdoors. The appeal is less animation spectacle than tactical reading: specialized powers, incomplete information, and a large female ensemble turn competence and motive into equally important variables. Restart also opens the franchise beyond the comparatively self-contained Cranberry-and-Fav material of the earlier story, revealing a wider culture of established magical girls; Magical Daisy is even famous enough in-universe to have an anime based on her exploits. Hashimoto’s pacing reaches the lethal pressure quickly, while Yoshioka’s composition keeps RPG logic and social paranoia moving together. Choose it for compact death-game strategy and franchise world-building, not weighty action choreography.
Key Characters
- KKanoe Hitokouji(VA: Yoshino Nanjou)
As one of only three billed leads, Kanoe is positioned as a stable point of identification within an ensemble intentionally crowded with competing veterans.
- CChika Tatehara(VA: Honoka Inoue)
Chika’s main-character billing marks her as one of the key figures to track while the opening rapidly introduces its unusually large roster.
- MMamori Totoyama(VA: Reina Kondou)
Mamori completes Restart’s central trio, providing a tighter focal group beneath the story’s sixteen-character contest.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
Restart provides the franchise’s first substantial look at the broader Magical Girl Raising Project world beyond the Cranberry-and-Fav material, and its magical girls enter as veterans rather than fresh recruits.
- 2
Magical Daisy is not merely another contestant: source-material commentary identifies her as an established heroine whose exploits have already inspired an anime within the story’s world.
- 3
The digital consequences are unusually concrete even for a death-game series: dying inside the game causes heart failure in the real world, removing any ambiguity about whether virtual defeat can be escaped.
- 4
SynergySP’s production reunites director Hiroyuki Hashimoto with series composer and scriptwriter Takao Yoshioka, while Masako Itou adapts Maruino’s original character designs for animation.
- 5
AniList’s audience tags emphasize the show’s particular character profile: Female Protagonist leads at 95%, while Magic, Kuudere, and Primarily Female Cast each register at 79%.
