Hyouma Kunato has started to settle in alongside Botan Nagatsuki and her household of tsukumogami—everyday objects inhabited by marebito spirits—yet his driving purpose remains unchanged: revenge. While he trains in Kyoto under the Kadomori family’s watch, forces beyond his notice begin to move.

The Bureau of Traditional Music, a trio of instrument tsukumogami, presses Botan’s family about why Hyouma has been brought close to the one who stands at the boundary between humans and marebito. Not long after, the paper umbrella tsukumogami Hyouma has hunted for years resurfaces, kidnapping Botan and her university friends. As he races to rescue the person he vowed to protect, Hyouma is pushed to reconsider what matters most if he intends to keep his promise to her.
