In Italy, the Social Welfare Agency pulls gravely injured young girls from hospital wards and rebuilds them with advanced cybernetic technology. Given enhanced bodies and subjected to conditioning, they’re trained as assassins tasked with carrying out the Italian government’s covert work.

Yet beneath the upgrades and programming, they remain children—quietly yearning for approval and connection with their handlers, even as they suspect the affection they feel may be engineered.
