Minase Mai and her friend Tomonari Kasumi are enjoying the newly launched MMORPG, “The World,” when a strange sound rings out—followed by both of them collapsing in reality. They’re rushed to the hospital, but only Mai wakes up; Kasumi remains trapped in an unexplained coma.

Soon after, Mai is contacted by Tokuoka Junichiro, the creator of “The World,” who reveals a disturbing pattern: six other players around the country have suffered the same sudden collapse and are now comatose. With the sound still haunting Mai and more questions than answers, she, Junichiro, and those around them begin digging into what “The World” truly is—and why playing it is leaving people unconscious.
