Synopsis

Haruka Nanase has mended fences with his longtime rival Rin Matsuoka, and their friendship is back on solid ground—along with a shared resolve to face each other in the pool once more. With tournaments ahead, Haruka trains alongside Makoto Tachibana, Rei Ryuugazaki, and Nagisa Hazuki, aiming to race with everything they have and win together as a team. At Samezuka Academy, Rin is equally focused on pushing forward.

As graduation draws closer, the pressure extends beyond competition. Rin has already settled on his plans for the future, while Haruka and Makoto find themselves unsure of what comes next, forced to confront the choices waiting beyond their school days.

Otaku Consensus

Free! The Movie -Timeless Medley- the Bond is best understood as a franchise-fan consolidation piece: Eisaku Kawanami’s direction and Kyoto Animation/Animation Do’s polished aquatic character animation give the Iwatobi side of Free! Eternal Summer a cleaner emotional through-line than a standard recap. Its most common limitation is built into the format: compression makes it less rewarding for newcomers and leaves some supporting material feeling like connective tissue rather than fully re-experienced drama.

Why You Should Watch

Watch this if you want the emotional payoff of a sports anime without a tournament-bracket lecture. The Bond scratches a similar itch to Haikyuu!! in its attention to team trust, but its real closest cousin is Kyoto Animation’s Tsurune: athletic performance is treated as posture, breathing, hesitation, and self-definition. Because it is a film-length distillation, it suits viewers who already care about Free!’s cast and want the Iwatobi relationships sharpened into one focused viewing session. The appeal is not “who wins the race,” but how a studio famous for subtle body language turns swimming starts, turns, locker-room silences, and graduation pressure into character drama. If you like sports anime where friendship is sincere but not frictionless, this is the franchise’s compact emotional refresher.

Key Characters

  • H
    Haruka Nanase(VA: Nobunaga Shimazaki)

Haruka remains fascinating because his quiet fixation on water turns the usual sports-anime hero drive into something more internal, physical, and difficult to verbalize.

  • M
    Makoto Tachibana(VA: Tatsuhisa Suzuki)

Makoto is the emotional stabilizer fans often single out for making Free!’s friendship drama feel grounded rather than merely sentimental.

  • R
    Rin Matsuoka(VA: Mamoru Miyano)

Rin brings the franchise its sharpest mix of competitive intensity and open-hearted vulnerability, making him more than a simple rival figure.

  • R
    Rei Ryuugazaki(VA: Daisuke Hirakawa)

Rei’s appeal lies in how his analytical, beauty-obsessed approach to swimming contrasts with a cast driven more by instinct and memory.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

The film is credited to Animation Do and Kyoto Animation, a pairing central to Free!’s identity as a sports title built as much on precise body acting and water effects as on race outcomes.

  • 2

Its structure is not a neutral series recap: The Bond foregrounds the Iwatobi-side relationships, while its companion Timeless Medley film, the Promise, is associated with Rin and Samezuka’s side of the franchise.

  • 3

Eisaku Kawanami directs here, a key name in later Free! animation projects, giving the film continuity with the franchise’s post-TV expansion rather than treating it as disposable recap material.

  • 4

The film’s compression emphasizes coming-of-age tension over procedural competition, which is why the AniList tag profile places Swimming at 80% and Coming of Age almost as high at 79%.

  • 5

Its reception numbers point to a solid but fan-skewing reputation: 7.61 on MyAnimeList from 17,406 votes and 74/100 on AniList, with popularity far below the main TV entries but satisfaction remaining respectable among viewers who sought it out.

Fun Facts & Trivia

Fun fact 1
Free! The Movie -Timeless Medley- the Bond was released on April 22, 2017 as a single finished film rather than a television cour, placing it between the earlier TV seasons and later Free! sequel projects.
Fun fact 2
The official genre and theme labeling is unusually narrow for a franchise with heavy character drama: it is listed simply as Sports with a School theme, while AniList’s tags capture the broader appeal through Swimming, Coming of Age, Cute Boys Doing Cute Things, and Primarily Male Cast.
Fun fact 3
The movie’s MyAnimeList standing shows the split between niche visibility and steady approval: rank #1724, popularity #3433, and more than seventeen thousand user votes at the time of the provided data.
Fun fact 4
AniList records 138 favourites for the film, a modest number that fits its role as a targeted Free! installment rather than a broad entry point for new viewers.
Fun fact 5
The title’s Japanese subtitle, Kizuna, translates to “bond,” matching the film’s editorial focus on the Iwatobi team dynamic rather than presenting itself as an all-purpose franchise summary.
