Synopsis
After completing the newest installment of the *Fairies Story* game, the team at Eagle Jump finally gets a well-earned break: a company trip to a ski resort. With the pressure of development behind them, the staff sets out to relax, celebrate, and enjoy some time away together.
For Aoba Suzukaze, it’s her first company vacation—something she’s been looking forward to, even as nerves creep in over one detail: she’s never skied before. Surrounded by her coworkers, Aoba settles into the trip as everyone unwinds and makes the most of their snowy getaway.
Otaku Consensus
Doga Kobo’s one-episode New Game! OVA works best as a compact character-comedy epilogue: Yoshiyuki Fujiwara’s direction and Fumihiko Shimo’s low-friction pacing keep the jokes moving through small physical bits, with Aoba’s snow-play moments and Rin’s caretaking energy standing out in web chatter. Its positive reception, reflected in a 7.4 MAL score and 72/100 AniList score, comes from the cast chemistry and refreshing tone; the genuine limitation is that the animation and dramatic ambition stay deliberately simple, making it less satisfying for viewers seeking the game-development pressure of the TV series.
Why You Should Watch
Watch this if you want a New Game! palate cleanser built around adult-cast warmth rather than production crunch. It scratches the same comfort-comedy itch as K-On! after-hours episodes, but with office-lady dynamics and game-studio in-jokes sitting underneath the cuteness; it is also a softer cousin to Shirobako for viewers who like creative-workplace camaraderie without industry anxiety. Because it is a single OVA, the appeal is in micro-beats: Aoba reacting like the junior employee in unfamiliar social rituals, coworkers teasing and looking after one another, and Doga Kobo selling personality through timing instead of spectacle. If you enjoy CGDCT ensembles but want the cast to be working adults, not club members, this is exactly the kind of low-commitment bonus episode that rewards attachment to the team.
Key Characters
- AAoba Suzukaze(VA: Yuuki Takada)
Aoba remains the OVA’s emotional lens, with the comedy leaning into her junior-employee eagerness and the fan-favorite contrast between professional growth and childlike reactions.
- RRin
Rin’s appeal in discussion around this special comes from her caretaker presence, with web commentary singling out her looking after others as one of the episode’s gentler comic beats.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
Doga Kobo keeps the OVA’s comedy largely interaction-driven; contemporary reviews singled out the animation as simple but effective, especially when characters bounce off one another rather than during set pieces.
- 2
The credited TV-series creative core is intact: Yoshiyuki Fujiwara directs, Ryouhei Takeshita serves as assistant director, Fumihiko Shimo handles series composition, and Ai Kikuchi provides character designs.
- 3
Its tag profile is unusually specific for a workplace CGDCT special: AniList marks Office Lady at 79%, Video Games at 79%, Software Development at 66%, and Inn at 60%, showing that the company identity remains central even outside desk-work scenes.
- 4
The OVA’s humor includes tactile winter gags rather than only office banter; web commentary specifically calls out Aoba playing with snowmen as a memorable small character beat.
- 5
As a one-episode release dated May 3, 2017, it is built as a compact franchise extra, so its pacing favors quick ensemble payoffs over a full standalone conflict.
