The Dragon Dentist

War consumes two neighboring nations, and one country’s greatest safeguard is an ancient dragon bound by oath to defend it. Even a creature capable of turning the tide of battle can be brought low by something as small as tooth decay, leaving the dragon dentists—a specialized unit tasked with maintaining the dragon’s teeth—responsible for keeping their living weapon battle-ready.

Nonoko Kishii is the lone survivor of a grueling recruitment in which volunteers must witness the manner of their own death and accept it without resistance. With that foreknowledge hanging over them, the dragon dentists carry out their duty with a calm resolve. Their ranks are shaken when Bernard “Bel” Octavius, a young officer from the opposing side, is killed by his own troops and then revived through the dragon’s teeth—an unsettling sign said to herald catastrophe. Taken in as a trainee under Nonoko’s watch, Bel must navigate their fatalistic outlook as the shadow of an approaching disaster grows nearer.
