Synopsis
Akari Akaza, Chinatsu Yoshikawa, Kyouko Toshinou, and Yui Funami get back together to mark a special occasion. After tossing around some characteristically odd ideas for how to celebrate, they settle on throwing a party in the Amusement Club room.
With a little assistance from their Student Council friends, preparations get underway—complete with a surprise meant for someone important. Along the way, their familiar chemistry and distinct quirks keep the planning lively as they work toward a fun, memorable day.
Otaku Consensus
Yuru Yuri’s 2019 OVA lands exactly where longtime viewers wanted it: fast, low-stakes gag pacing, dependable Amusement Club chemistry, and a Lay-duce production that keeps the series’ relaxed art and sound intact. Critics and fans praise it as a compact return to “classic Yuru Yuri,” with the common reservation that it functions more as a reward for existing fans than as a self-contained entry with new dramatic or thematic ground.
Why You Should Watch
Watch this if you want CGDCT comedy that treats yuri tension as a recurring comic rhythm rather than a route to melodrama. This OVA is best for viewers who already like school-club chaos, deadpan reactions, and character-driven bits where the joke is often in who reacts rather than what happens. It scratches a similar itch to Lucky Star’s hangout banter and K-On!’s comfort viewing, but with more overt “les-yay” teasing and a sharper gag-comedy tempo. Because it is a single-episode special, it works as a light palate cleanser between heavier series: no lore homework, no emotional punishment, just a polished burst of familiar timing, voice chemistry, and Amusement Club nonsense.
Key Characters
- AAkari Akaza(VA: Shiori Mikami)
Akari remains one of Yuru Yuri’s signature comic engines because the series turns her supposed main-character status into a running joke about presence, timing, and being lovingly overlooked.
- YYui Funami(VA: Minami Tsuda)
Yui is the stabilizing straight-woman of the group, and much of the comedy lands because her dry restraint gives the louder personalities something to bounce off.
- KKyouko Toshinou(VA: Yuka Ootsubo)
Kyouko is the chaos generator fans associate with the franchise’s fastest punchlines, pushing scenes into absurdity while still feeling inseparable from the club’s warmth.
- CChinatsu Yoshikawa(VA: Rumi Ookubo)
Chinatsu’s appeal comes from the gap between her cute outward image and the more intense, eccentric impulses that the show mines for character-specific gags.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
This is a one-episode OVA rather than a full TV season, so its structure favors concentrated gag delivery over episode-to-episode escalation. That format is a major reason fan reviews frame it as a compact dose of “classic Yuru Yuri.”
- 2
Lay-duce is the credited studio for this 2019 entry, and the response highlighted that the animation and sound quality stayed comfortably in line with the franchise’s expected softness rather than feeling like a throwaway special.
- 3
The OVA keeps the core quartet’s Japanese voice cast intact: Shiori Mikami, Minami Tsuda, Yuka Ootsubo, and Rumi Ookubo. For a series built on reaction timing and familiar verbal rhythms, that continuity is one of its biggest assets.
- 4
Its comedy is built around Amusement Club and Student Council interaction rather than a conventional plot hook, matching the franchise’s reputation for school-club gag humor and light yuri-flavored teasing.
- 5
Audience reception is notably positive for a single special: the MAL score listed in the research data is 7.69 from 14,128 votes, with at least one user review calling it one of the funniest individual episodes in the series.
