Synopsis

With the war against evil all but decided, Leonis Death Magnus—the Undead King and last surviving Dark Lord—finds himself unable to win alone. He entombs himself far beneath the earth, planning to awaken a thousand years later through reincarnation and restore his demonic forces.

A millennium on, the world he returns to barely resembles the one he left behind. The old conflict has faded into legend, sorcery has given way to magical devices, and humanity now battles terrifying creatures known as Voids. At Excalibur Academy, gifted students train to face them, wielding powers that take shape as Holy Swords.

Reborn as a ten-year-old human, Leonis is discovered by the earnest Riselia Ray Crystalia in the ruins of his sealed chamber. Mistaking his situation for amnesia, she takes him in and helps get him enrolled at Excalibur Academy—leaving Leonis to navigate an unfamiliar age while quietly holding onto his ambition to conquer the world.

Otaku Consensus

Otaku Consensus: The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy lands as a watchable but heavily qualified light-novel adaptation, strongest when Passione’s smooth 2D character work and the season’s gradual lore reveals make the ancient-war mythology feel larger than the academy setting. Its defenders point to the back half’s steadier drip of world history and main-group backstory, while the dominant criticism is that familiar harem-school power-fantasy tropes and weak-looking CGI Void monsters blunt the impact of its better ideas.

Why You Should Watch

If you want a reincarnation fantasy that trades pure medieval questing for academy squadrons, magical tech, and leftover grudges from a forgotten war, this is built for that lane. It scratches a lighter version of The Misfit of Demon King Academy’s “ancient ruler in a modern school” itch, but folds in more sci-fi monster-fighting and harem-roommate energy. The appeal is not originality; it is the steady drip of world history, faction memory, and character backstory that viewers singled out as stronger in the back half. Watch it when you want a compact 12-episode power-fantasy snack with Passione’s generally smooth character animation, not when you want ruthless deconstruction or prestige-level CG creatures. The series rewards tolerance for light-novel tropes with lore that keeps reaching beyond the classroom.

Key Characters

  • L
    Leonis Death Magnus(VA: Marina Inoue)

Leonis is divisive in exactly the way the series is: his ancient Dark Lord confidence filtered through a child’s body creates a mix of menace, comedy, and unapologetic light-novel wish fulfillment.

  • R
    Riselia Ray Crystalia(VA: Yui Ishikawa)

Riselia functions as the show’s emotional anchor, and positive viewer reactions often connect her to the season’s slow unveiling of the core group’s personal history.

  • R
    Regina Mercedes(VA: Aya Suzaki)

Regina helps define the academy ensemble’s harem-school chemistry, giving the series its lighter interpersonal texture between Void battles and lore drops.

  • S
    Sakuya Sieglinde(VA: Honoka Kuroki)

Sakuya broadens the main squad beyond a single heroine dynamic, fitting the show’s approach of parceling out background details across the 12-episode run.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

Passione produced the 12-episode TV anime, and viewer comments repeatedly separate its smoother character animation from its weaker creature compositing. The result is a show that looks more comfortable in academy interaction and 2D action cuts than in full CGI monster spectacle.

  • 2

The season’s structure leans on incremental lore rather than a single large midseason twist. Reviews that rated it positively emphasized that each episode adds information about the world, Leonis, or the main group, with the later episodes considered more engaging by its defenders.

  • 3

Its setting combines fantasy-school ranking energy with post-magical sci-fi warfare, replacing a purely medieval framework with magical devices, Holy Sword users, and Void combat. That hybrid is the clearest reason it does not feel like a straight Demon Lord Academy clone despite using familiar genre parts.

  • 4

The CGI Void monsters are the most consistently criticized visual element, with reviewers calling them hard to look at. This criticism appears even in otherwise moderate takes that found the show watchable.

  • 5

The reception is sharply polarized for a mid-tier seasonal title: MAL lists it at 6.2/10 from 73,983 votes, while user reviews range from underrated-lore praise to blunt accusations of recycled light-novel tropes.
