Synopsis

Salaryman Tsuyoshi Mukouda is mistakenly summoned to the Kingdom of Reijseger as a would-be hero in a different world. Sensing there may be more to the royal family’s intentions than they let on, he manages to avoid being pressed into service—helped by the fact that his lone ability, “Online Supermarket,” is dismissed as non-combat and therefore worthless.

That “useless” skill quickly becomes Mukouda’s lifeline: it lets him buy affordable ingredients and cooking supplies from Japan, items treated as rare luxuries in his new surroundings. His meals soon attract the attention of Fel, a formidable mythical wolf whose appetite is strong enough to prompt a swift familiar contract. Traveling together, Mukouda makes a living as an adventurer and merchant, discovering the world one satisfying campfire dish at a time.

Otaku Consensus

Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill earns its 7.63 MAL score and 76 AniList rating by treating isekai as a comfort-food travelogue rather than a power-fantasy checklist. Kiyoshi Matsuda’s relaxed direction, Michiko Yokote’s clean episodic composition, and MAPPA’s unusually polished food animation make the adaptation feel precise instead of disposable. The recurring criticism is real: viewers looking for a strong overarching plot, heavy drama, or a large dramatic cast may find its low-stakes structure too thin.

Why You Should Watch

Watch this if you want the decompression loop of Laid-Back Camp filtered through isekai economics, creature companionship, and absurdly appetizing campfire meals, without the grim hero’s-journey baggage that often comes with summoned-to-another-world stories. Its pleasure is procedural: shopping, cooking, traveling, selling, registering, camping, and slowly turning an alien fantasy world into a livable routine. MAPPA gives the meals enough texture and timing that the food scenes become the show’s action set pieces, while the comedy comes from managing overpowered companions rather than defeating a world-ending villain. It scratches a similar comfort itch to Restaurant to Another World, but with more road-trip momentum and outdoor survival flavor. Best for viewers who like isekai systems, found-family dynamics, and chill fantasy logistics more than tournament arcs or political intrigue.

Key Characters

  • T
    Tsuyoshi Mukouda(VA: Yuuma Uchida)

Mukouda stands out as an isekai lead because his appeal comes from risk management, budgeting, cooking routines, and social caution rather than heroic bravado.

  • F
    Fel(VA: Satoshi Hino)

Fel is the fan-favorite power fantasy turned hungry travel companion, combining mythic intimidation with the pet-like comedy of someone who can be negotiated with through dinner.

  • S
    Sui(VA: Hina Kino)

Sui adds the series’ strongest dose of mascot warmth, giving the found-family angle a softer counterweight to Fel’s overwhelming presence.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

MAPPA handled the animation, and the production’s most praised visual hook is not battle spectacle but the careful presentation of cooking, ingredients, and meal payoff. That focus helps separate it from isekai titles where food is treated as a throwaway gag.

  • 2

The series runs as a 12-episode Winter 2023 adaptation, airing from January 11 to March 29, which gives it a compact seasonal structure built around travel stops and repeated daily-life rituals rather than a sprawling campaign.

  • 3

AniList’s tag distribution captures the show’s unusual identity: Food at 97%, Found Family at 95%, Iyashikei at 85%, Camping at 82%, and Economics at 53%. Those numbers point to a fantasy series more interested in domestic systems and comfort routines than conquest.

  • 4

The adaptation is built on a clear tonal constraint: low drama, light action, and no rush to overpopulate the cast. Reviews repeatedly single out its relaxed pacing as a strength because it avoids the cluttered party-building common to many isekai premieres.

  • 5

The creature-taming angle is central enough to register as a 68% AniList tag, but the show frames powerful companions through appetite, travel habits, and household management rather than only combat utility.

Fun Facts & Trivia

Fun fact 1
This title was widely noted in viewer discussion as MAPPA’s first major venture into the isekai genre, leading fans to joke about it as the studio’s “Peak-sekai” because it applied premium production values to such a cozy premise.
Fun fact 2
The original story is credited to Ren Eguchi, with original character designs by Masa; the anime’s character designs were adapted by Nao Ootsu, while Hisao Muramatsu and En Arakawa are credited for accessory design.
Fun fact 3
Series composition was handled by Michiko Yokote, a key reason the anime’s episodic cooking-and-travel rhythm stays orderly across its 12-episode run rather than turning into a loose sketch collection.
Fun fact 4
The show’s reception is unusually broad for a comfort isekai: it holds a MAL popularity rank of #810 with 187,065 votes and an AniList favourites count of 3,579.
Fun fact 5
A second season has been announced, confirming that the anime’s combination of gourmet fantasy, camping, and found-family comedy resonated beyond its initial Winter 2023 broadcast.
