Synopsis
In the vibrant community of Animal Town, where humans and animals coexist peacefully, the life of second-year junior high student Iroha Inukai takes an unexpected turn. Accompanied by her loyal dog, Komugi, Iroha enjoys their daily routines until they encounter a chaotic being known as Garugaru, who disrupts the town's tranquility.
In a surprising twist, Komugi transforms into Cure Wonderful, a powerful Pretty Cure, to defend Iroha and restore harmony. As Iroha navigates the challenges of adolescence and the responsibilities of her newfound role, she learns the importance of friendship, courage, and the bond she shares with her beloved companion. Together, they embark on a journey filled with action and heartwarming moments, uniting against the threats that endanger their peaceful world.
Otaku Consensus
Wonderful Precure! lands as one of the more distinctive modern Precure seasons because its action is deliberately redirected into calming, healing, and relationship repair rather than magical-girl violence. Critics and fans most often praise Toei Animation’s long-form character focus, comic animal-driven antics, and emotionally grounded individual arcs, while the recurring complaint is that the anti-fighting rule sometimes forces contrived or overly easy resolutions.
Why You Should Watch
Watch Wonderful Precure! if you want the ritual pleasures of a 50-episode magical-girl series without the usual escalation into harder, flashier combat. It scratches the team-transformation itch associated with Precure and Sailor Moon, but its appeal is closer to comfort fantasy: conflicts are built around empathy, pet-and-owner intimacy, and character growth rather than finishing moves. Viewers who bounced off darker magical-girl revisions like Puella Magi Madoka Magica, or who want a children’s anime that still gives adults emotional texture to read into, will find the season’s gentleness purposeful rather than bland. Its best hook is the way the show treats “action” as restraint: the tension comes from understanding a distressed creature, not defeating an enemy.
Key Characters
- IIroha Inukai(VA: Atsumi Tanezaki)
Iroha works as the series’ human emotional anchor, giving the animal-centered premise a grounded adolescent point of view rather than letting it play only as mascot comedy.
- KKomugi Inukai(VA: Maria Naganawa)
Komugi is the season’s signature novelty: a dog whose exuberant, instantly friendly personality shapes the tone of Cure Wonderful more than a standard heroic lead template would.
- MMayu Nekoyashiki(VA: Reina Ueda)
Mayu is frequently tied to the season’s praise for more fleshed-out individual character material, giving the cast a quieter counterweight to Komugi’s impulsive warmth.
- YYuki Nekoyashiki(VA: Satsumi Matsuda)
Yuki stands out through the show’s pet-and-person dynamic, reinforcing that Wonderful Precure! is as invested in companionship habits as it is in transformation spectacle.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
The season makes a structural choice unusual for an action-tagged magical-girl anime: confrontations are framed around calming Garugaru rather than beating them down. That choice is the core reason reviewers describe it as more explicitly anti-violence than many other Precure entries.
- 2
Toei Animation uses the franchise’s long 50-episode format to emphasize individual character arcs instead of compressing development into a short cour. Fan discussion specifically highlights the cast as better fleshed out than expected for a monster-of-the-week children’s series.
- 3
The animal relationship theme is not just surface decoration; reviews single out human-animal bonds as the emotional engine of the season. This gives the show a different texture from magical-girl seasons where mascots mainly provide exposition or power-ups.
- 4
Comedy is a major part of the show’s identity, with web criticism calling out its “fun and hilarious cartoon antics” alongside its emotional beats. That tonal mix helps the anti-violence premise feel playful instead of purely didactic.
- 5
The season’s reception is notably warmer among engaged Precure viewers than its low mainstream visibility suggests: it holds a 7.57 MAL score from 2,675 votes while sitting at a much lower popularity rank of #7412.
