Synopsis

During a family trip to their traditional hot spring resort, Kazuya Kinoshita finds himself stuck in the same frustrating loop with Chizuru Ichinose—still only his rental girlfriend, and still giving him signals he can’t quite read. With the getaway ending and Tokyo ahead, Kazuya resolves to bring their long-running act to a close and finally stop hiding behind the arrangement.

But Mami Nanami has other plans. Determined to expose the truth, she moves to shatter Kazuya and Chizuru’s carefully maintained pretense in front of his relatives and friends. With their “relationship” unraveling in public, Kazuya is forced to react fast if he wants to keep his personal life from falling apart.

Otaku Consensus

Season 5 is Rent-a-Girlfriend at its most concentrated: Kazuomi Koga and TMS Entertainment get the most mileage from the family-resort exposure arc, where Mitsutaka Hirota's series composition turns romantic indecision into ensemble social pressure. The verdict remains sharply divided, reflected in its 6.21 MAL score and 61/100 AniList score, because the same Kazuya-Chizuru hesitation that fuels its cringe comedy is also the most common complaint: the romance still feels prolonged past the point where many viewers wanted decisive movement.

Why You Should Watch

Watch this if you want a rom-com built around social panic, contractual intimacy, and secondhand embarrassment rather than clean wish fulfillment. Season 5 is for viewers who enjoy Nisekoi-style fake-relationship pressure but want it filtered through an adult cast, family expectations, money, and the awkward ethics of paid companionship. It also scratches a different itch from Kaguya-sama: Love is War; the comedy is not a battle of geniuses, but a cascade of bad timing, exposed motives, and characters who cannot exit the performance they created. TMS Entertainment keeps the format compact at 12 episodes, so the appeal is less about a fresh reset and more about watching a long-running romantic lie get stress-tested in public.

Key Characters

  • K
    Kazuya Kinoshita

Kazuya remains the franchise's lightning rod: fans read him as both the engine of its cringe-comedy momentum and the reason its romantic progress can feel maddeningly self-sabotaged.

  • C
    Chizuru Ichinose

Chizuru is compelling because her professional composure makes every small emotional signal feel loaded, keeping the fake-relationship premise tense long after the audience understands the arrangement.

  • M
    Mami Nanami

Mami stands out as a rom-com antagonist who weaponizes social exposure, turning politeness, family spaces, and public embarrassment into sharper tools than slapstick.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

The season is produced by TMS Entertainment with Kazuomi Koga directing, Mitsutaka Hirota handling series composition, and Kanna Hirayama credited for character design, giving the fifth season a clearly defined production spine rather than an anonymous sequel handoff.

  • 2

Its key structural hook is the family-resort exposure arc, which shifts the series' fake-dating tension from private awkwardness into a public performance watched by relatives and friends.

  • 3

AniList's two highest-confidence tags are Fake Relationship and Prostitution at 92%, a blunt database reading that separates Rent-a-Girlfriend from ordinary harem rom-coms by foregrounding the paid-companionship contract as the core dramatic device.

  • 4

The show is tagged as Primarily Adult Cast at 73%, which matters for its comedy: the pressure comes from family reputation, dating economics, and adult accountability rather than the school-festival machinery of many romance anime.

  • 5

Kenichi Maeyamada is credited for music while Hajime Takakuwa handles sound direction, splitting the season's comic timing between score, vocal reactions, and the uncomfortable pauses that define the franchise's embarrassment humor.
