Shogi, Japan’s chess-like strategy game, is beloved across generations, and the very best can rise into the professional ranks. At the top sits the coveted title of Ryuuou—“Dragon King”—reserved for the player who reaches the summit of competitive shogi.

Yaichi Kuzuryuu earns that honor as the youngest Ryuuou in history, only to find his triumph met with cold skepticism, with detractors even branding him the worst to ever hold the title. On top of that, he’s forced to face a promise he neglected: if he won, he would take Ai Hinatsuru, a young girl, on as a student. When Ai appears at his home to collect on their agreement, Yaichi reluctantly becomes her coach, and the two set their sights on sharpening their skills—Ai to draw out her potential, and Yaichi to prove he truly deserves his place at the top.
