Synopsis

After his father’s death, Tanjiro Kamado becomes the one responsible for providing for his family, living a modest but content life on a secluded mountain. Hoping to earn a little money, he heads to the nearby village to sell charcoal, only to be delayed until nightfall and urged to stay indoors by a wary stranger who speaks of man-eating demons roaming the woods after dark.

Tanjiro returns home the next day to a nightmare: his family has been massacred, and the only survivor, his sister Nezuko, has been transformed into a demon. Refusing to abandon her, he vows to hunt down those responsible and find a way to protect what remains of her humanity, eventually crossing paths with the Demon Slayer Corps as he takes up the fight against the demons.

Otaku Consensus

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a modern shounen juggernaut whose reputation is anchored by ufotable’s premium production—fluid swordplay, bold compositing, and striking CG-assisted action that routinely elevates familiar genre beats. Fans praise its emotional directness and easy-to-follow momentum, while detractors argue the narrative leans conventional and occasionally undercuts tension with pacing issues and frequent backstory flashbacks. The result is a massively popular, award-winning historical supernatural action series that’s often called “carried by animation,” yet still consistently delivers crowd-pleasing catharsis.

Why You Should Watch

Watch Demon Slayer if you want a battle shounen that prioritizes sensory impact and clean emotional payoffs. ufotable brings a “big movie” sheen to weekly TV—kinetic sword choreography, vivid effects work, and CG integration that makes supernatural techniques feel tangible rather than abstract. It’s also a travel-forward story with a clear moral core: compassion colliding with horror, tragedy, and revenge in a historical setting where every encounter feels like a self-contained folktale. If you’re new to anime, it’s an accessible gateway; if you’re seasoned, it’s a masterclass in how top-tier direction and character acting can make classic shounen structure hit like a freight train.
