Inu-Oh

In the waters off Dan-no-ura—site of the Heike clan’s downfall—Tomona dives for an ancient sword and pays a devastating price, losing both his eyesight and his father. With little left to cling to, he devotes himself to the biwa, honing his talent until he earns a place among an esteemed troupe of storytelling performers under the name Tomoichi.

Not long after, Tomoichi befriends a mysterious figure who has long used his deformed appearance to frighten others, only to be disarmed by the blind musician’s unshaken respect. Taking the name Inu-Oh, the stranger reveals an uncanny gift: he can hear spirits recounting forgotten Heike tales, and together the two begin turning those stories into performances.

As Tomoichi becomes Tomoari and helps elevate Inu-Oh’s daring, underground dance spectacles, their popularity surges with the common people. Yet their bold, unconventional style runs headlong into traditions fiercely guarded by the shogunate, forcing the duo to navigate the power of fame in a society determined to control what is allowed to be seen and heard.
