Synopsis

Tsukasa Jinguuji has coasted on good looks and effortless popularity since school, especially with women, while his best friend Hinata Tachibana has spent years stuck in his shadow and longing for a girlfriend. Now in their thirties as salarymen, the contrast hasn’t changed—Jinguuji still shows little interest in romance, and Tachibana is still openly frustrated—yet the two remain inseparable.

After a night out where Jinguuji once again steals the spotlight, Tachibana drunkenly blurts out a wish to become a stunning woman. A goddess answers in the most literal way possible, whisking both men to a fantasy world with a mandate to defeat the Demon Lord, while transforming Tachibana into an irresistibly beautiful woman. The change twists their dynamic in unexpected ways: Jinguuji finds himself drawn to Tachibana’s new form, and Tachibana finally understands firsthand what it’s like to be the object of constant attention. With their mission hanging over them, they’ll need to keep their feelings in check—or risk being trapped by them.

Otaku Consensus

Fabiniku lands as a sharper isekai parody than its elevator pitch suggests, with Sayaka Yamai’s direction and Toshimitsu Takeuchi’s series composition keeping the 12-episode run fast, joke-dense, and focused on the central relationship rather than generic quest mechanics. Fans and reviewers consistently singled out its absurd comedy, slapstick timing, and “gayest straight anime” romantic tension as the hook, while the most credible criticism is that its appeal is narrow: viewers who do not buy into the gender-bending satire early will find the joke engine repetitive.

Why You Should Watch

Watch Fabiniku if you want an isekai comedy that treats the fantasy world as a pressure cooker for social embarrassment instead of another power-scaling checklist. It scratches a similar itch to KonoSuba’s genre mockery, but swaps party dysfunction for adult salaryman neuroses, magical sex-shift comedy, and a romance dynamic that keeps tripping over its own labels. The show is especially rewarding for viewers who like parody with a strong central duo: the humor is less about “look, an RPG trope” and more about how quickly dignity collapses when attraction, jealousy, and divine nonsense share the same room. If you want LGBTQ-adjacent tension, slapstick, and meta isekai gags without a grim fantasy plot dragging the pacing down, this is a compact 12-episode hit.

Key Characters

  • T
    Tsukasa Jinguuji

Jinguuji works because he is both the deadpan straight man and the show’s most compromised participant, turning every attempt at emotional control into part of the joke.

  • H
    Hinata Tachibana

Hinata is the series’ comic accelerant, a character whose insecurity, vanity, and sudden social power make the gender-bending premise feel like satire rather than a one-note gimmick.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

The anime’s AniList tag profile is unusually explicit about its identity: Parody at 100%, Gender Bending at 98%, Isekai at 96%, Slapstick at 88%, and Satire at 86%. That combination is a useful warning label and selling point, because the show is built more like a genre roast than a conventional fantasy adventure.

  • 2

Unlike many isekai TV anime centered on teenagers or self-insert progression, Fabiniku is tagged as a Primarily Adult Cast series at 85%. Its comedy comes from adult social frustration, long-term friendship dynamics, and salaryman-coded emotional repression rather than school-life wish fulfillment.

  • 3

OLM produced the 12-episode adaptation, with Sayaka Yamai directing and Toshimitsu Takeuchi handling series composition. The result is a brisk seasonal comedy structure: short setups, rapid reversals, and a preference for punchline momentum over extended lore explanations.

  • 4

The series occupies a deliberately messy romantic-comedy space, reflected in AniList tags that include LGBTQ+ Themes at 84%, Heterosexual at 68%, and Boys’ Love at 60%. That tag spread captures why fan reactions often describe it as both absurdly straight and absurdly gay at the same time.

  • 5

Takeshi Watanabe is credited with the music, while the ending theme credits specifically list Kaoru Ookubo for composition and arrangement and Kiyomi Kumano for lyrics. The production’s sound side leans into comic escalation rather than treating the fantasy setting with solemn grandeur.

Fun Facts & Trivia

Fun fact 1
The series is commonly abbreviated as Fabiniku, taken from the Japanese title Fantasy Bishoujo Juniku Ojisan to. The title has been rendered as “With a Fogie Reincarnated as a Pretty Fantasy Girl,” which makes the joke far more blunt than the official English title.
Fun fact 2
The anime adapts an online manga that began its original run on November 18, 2019 and was still listed as ongoing in the provided source context. Yuu Tsurusaki is credited with the original story, while the manga is noted as being illustrated by Shin Ikezawa.
Fun fact 3
The TV anime aired as a Winter 2022 series from January 12 to March 30, 2022, finishing at 12 episodes. Its MAL footprint is sizable for a niche parody title: 95,479 votes, a 7.12 score, popularity rank #1345, and overall rank #4156.
Fun fact 4
AniList’s reception data is closely aligned with MAL’s: the show sits at 70/100 and has 1,002 favourites. That places it in the “liked by its audience more than canonized by critics” zone typical of high-concept comedy anime.
Fun fact 5
The key production credits separate original story, original character design, anime character design, sound direction, and music: Yuu Tsurusaki, Chibimaru, Aoi Yamato, Toshiki Kameyama, and Takeshi Watanabe are all individually credited in those roles.
