Synopsis
Mitsumi Iwakura leaves her quiet hometown for a prestigious Tokyo high school, convinced that the carefully planned path she’s drawn for herself will lead to a future where she can help improve Japan. Confident and earnest, she expects her new life in the city to unfold without a hitch.
Reality hits immediately when Mitsumi gets lost and runs late on her very first day. She’s saved from facing it alone after meeting fellow first-year Sousuke Shima, who’s also struggling to find his way, and the two head to school together. Even after arriving, Mitsumi’s nerves and missteps earn her an awkward start with her classmates—but her growing connection with Sousuke begins to draw attention, setting the stage for new relationships to form in the unfamiliar bustle of Tokyo.
Otaku Consensus
Skip and Loafer earned its Spring 2023 sleeper-hit reputation by trusting small social shifts over manufactured drama, with Kotomi Deai’s direction and series composition giving P.A. Works’ adaptation a calm, observant rhythm. Critics and fans consistently singled out the supporting cast for feeling like actual high schoolers with biases, insecurities, and changing loyalties, while the main complaint is that viewers wanting sharper romantic escalation or plot-heavy conflict may find its low-key pacing too gentle.
Why You Should Watch
Watch Skip and Loafer if you want a school anime about emotional intelligence rather than wish fulfillment: awkward conversations, first impressions, envy, kindness, and social self-protection all matter here. It scratches a similar itch to Kimi ni Todoke’s warm social blooming and Horimiya’s ensemble-friendly school life, but with a more grounded seinen sensibility and less dependence on romantic spectacle. The show is especially rewarding for viewers who like character writing where classmates are not “types” so much as teenagers making partial, sometimes unfair reads of one another. Its iyashikei softness is not escapism; it is a way of making ordinary growth feel consequential.
Key Characters
- MMitsumi Iwakura(VA: Tomoyo Kurosawa)
Mitsumi stands out because her confidence is never treated as simple competence or comic delusion; fans respond to how the series lets her earnestness disrupt, comfort, and unsettle the people around her.
- SSousuke Shima(VA: Akinori Egoshi)
Sousuke is compelling because his easy charm reads less like a romantic ideal than a practiced social mask, giving his scenes a quiet tension beneath the show’s gentle surface.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
P.A. Works handles the series as a restrained character piece rather than a high-energy school comedy, using soft expressions and conversational timing to make social nuance the main spectacle.
- 2
Kotomi Deai serves as both director and series composition writer, giving the 12-episode adaptation a notably unified tone: relaxed, observant, and tightly focused on interpersonal cause and effect.
- 3
The show’s identity on AniList is unusually specific for a school drama: School at 95%, Female Protagonist at 94%, Coming of Age at 91%, Urban at 83%, and Iyashikei at 77%, with additional LGBTQ+ and Transgender tags marking it as broader than a standard classroom romance.
- 4
Its supporting cast became one of the dominant talking points in reviews, with critics praising how students carry prejudices, social strategies, and insecurities instead of functioning as simple foils for the leads.
- 5
During a Spring 2023 season crowded with louder action titles, Skip and Loafer still ranked #7 for the season on MyAnimeList with an 8.16 rating in contemporary coverage, turning into a word-of-mouth favorite.
