Le Portrait de Petit Cossette

Eiri Kurahashi, a Japanese art student working at an antique shop, starts to unsettle those around him. He grows distracted and distant, his personality shifting so sharply that his friends can only guess something—or someone—is behind it.

The source soon becomes clear to Eiri: inside an antique Venetian glass his uncle brought back from France, he sees a striking, doll-like girl as if she exists in a world sealed within the object. Unable to shake her presence, he fills his sketchbook with her image and finds himself consumed by the fascination. When he spots her again in a portrait by the enigmatic Italian painter Marchello Orlando, he learns her name—Cossette d’Auvergne—and the grim fate that befell her and her family.

Closing the shop one night, Eiri hears a voice pleading with him not to go. At last confronting the focus of his obsession, he answers her call—and enters into a bargain whose meaning he has yet to grasp.
