Synopsis

At Kamome Academy, whispers tell of a mysterious clock hidden somewhere on campus—an artifact said to regulate the school’s flow of time. It is guarded by three clock keepers who embody the past, present, and future. When an unexpected disturbance throws that balance off, chaos spreads: students begin aging at an alarming rate, and even the academy itself starts to crumble.

With the situation spiraling, Nene Yashiro and Kou Minamoto turn to Hanako-kun for answers. Their search for whoever set the disaster in motion leads deeper than a simple culprit hunt, uncovering buried secrets and forging new promises along the way. As the truth comes to light, both students and apparitions are drawn into a struggle against an inescapable fate—and the living must fight for a way out.

Otaku Consensus

Youhei Fukui’s controlled direction, more assured pacing, and Lerche’s closer attention to the source make Season 2 a marked improvement over its predecessor, with the Clock Keepers material and its consequential reveals earning particular praise. Its storybook framing, melancholic atmosphere, and cute-but-unsettling imagery work in concert rather than competition, though that same tonal dissonance—and the series’ notoriously misleading title—remains its largest barrier to entry.

Why You Should Watch

Watch Season 2 if you want school-bound urban fantasy that favors emotional mysteries and eerie folklore over constant exorcism battles. It scratches the same itch as Noragami’s traffic between human and supernatural lives, while using the cute/macabre visual contrast associated with Shadows House: rounded designs, saturated pop-art colors, and imagery that can turn quietly disturbing without abandoning its storybook identity. The 12-episode structure accommodates both compact supernatural episodes and longer serialized arcs, so character relationships continue developing between major revelations. This is also the stronger entry for viewers who found the first season uneven; fan reception repeatedly highlights its improved adaptation choices, cleaner dramatic progression, and deeper treatment of personal fears. The result is supernatural shounen with a distinctly melancholic pulse rather than a combat-first formula.

Key Characters

  • H
    Hanako-kun(VA: Megumi Ogata)

Hanako-kun remains compelling because his impish theatricality and emotional evasiveness allow Megumi Ogata to make humor, menace, and buried sadness coexist in the same exchange.

  • K
    Kou Minamoto(VA: Shouya Chiba)

Kou’s earnest moral instinct gives the supernatural conflicts a human center, especially when simple ideas about exorcists and apparitions stop providing adequate answers.

  • N
    Nene Yashiro(VA: Akari Kitou)

Nene functions as more than an audience surrogate, balancing expressive comedy with an increasing awareness that affection and curiosity can carry permanent consequences.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

Lerche preserves the franchise’s illustrated, panel-like aesthetic rather than chasing fluidity for its own sake, using saturated colors, decorative compositions, and abrupt visual shifts to make cute character designs feel genuinely uncanny.

  • 2

The season alternates shorter supernatural stories with multi-episode material, a structural balance specifically praised by viewers because it gives the ensemble room to breathe without weakening the larger narrative.

  • 3

The Clock Keepers storyline supplies the season’s strongest sustained dramatic movement, while fan reviews repeatedly place Season 2’s major arcs among the franchise’s best material.

  • 4

Art director Hiromasa Ogura, color designer Saki Tada, and photography director Mizuho Shimada support the ethereal, melancholic atmosphere highlighted by critics, ensuring that lighting, palette, and background detail reinforce the emotional unease.

  • 5

Dedicated prop designers Koutarou Tazawa and Chiharu Koyama help give the school’s supernatural objects a designed mythology, while CG director Takuya Umeda handles the digital component of the production.
