Synopsis
Juggling Kamome Academy’s constant supernatural trouble alongside everyday school chaos, Nene Yashiro finally looks forward to the annual class sleepover as a chance to relax with her best friend, Aoi Akane. But the night coincides with Urabon, a time when the boundary between the living and the dead warps—letting dangerous spirits slip into the school.
As a malicious apparition closes in, Nene is saved by Shinigami, the Sixth Wonder, who ensnares souls with the sound of his flute. Shinigami’s attention quickly turns to Aoi, abducting her as a sacrifice meant to seal the barrier permanently. With Hanako-kun and Akane Aoi at her side, Nene heads into the deepest reaches of the realm of the dead, racing to bring Aoi back before time runs out.
Otaku Consensus
Youhei Fukui’s direction and Lerche’s storybook presentation give the Sixth Wonder material the melancholy, romantic tension, and sudden darkness that manga readers expected from one of the source’s most admired arcs. Fans praise this cour as a notably careful adaptation, but its brisk progression remains the chief complaint, with omitted or compressed scenes occasionally weakening the connective tissue between major emotional beats. Even so, the strong reception reflects a sequel operating with greater confidence and focus than its visibility suggests.
Why You Should Watch
Watch this cour if you want supernatural school fiction that can pivot from mischievous banter to genuine mortality without abandoning its ornate, fairy-tale identity. It scratches the same itch as Noragami’s mixture of comedy, affection, and afterlife melancholy, while its enclosed storybook unease recalls Shadows House. Lerche’s vivid color design and theatrical compositions keep even dialogue-heavy passages visually expressive, and the 12-episode focus gives the cast’s relationships more weight than a sequence of disposable hauntings would. Manga readers have singled out this material as one of the source’s strongest arcs, particularly for its suspense and restrained romantic tension. This is not an entry point, however: it rewards familiarity with the earlier anime and assumes investment in its supernatural rules, rivalries, and unresolved bonds.
Key Characters
- HHanako-kun(VA: Megumi Ogata)
Megumi Ogata reinforces Hanako-kun’s appeal as a figure who can switch from impish comic timing to unsettling emotional opacity within the same exchange.
- NNene Yashiro(VA: Akari Kitou)
Nene remains the ensemble’s emotional anchor, with Akari Kitou balancing expressive comedy, romantic vulnerability, and the mounting resolve demanded by this darker cour.
- KKou Minamoto(VA: Shouya Chiba)
Kou’s earnest exorcist instincts provide a grounded moral counterweight to the series’ more secretive and ethically ambiguous supernatural characters.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
This 12-episode cour concentrates on the Sixth Wonder material, which manga readers in the available reviews identify as one of the original work’s best arcs rather than treating it as another isolated school mystery.
- 2
Lerche preserves the franchise’s distinctive illustrated quality through Mayuka Itou’s character designs, Saki Tada’s color design, and Hiromasa Ogura’s art direction; critics specifically highlighted its fairy-tale atmosphere and ethereal melancholy.
- 3
The tonal design deliberately interlocks comedy, romance, and grim backstory instead of separating them into different episodes, a blend repeatedly cited as the series’ defining strength.
- 4
The ensemble emphasis is unusually pronounced for a supernatural school series: AniList gives both Ensemble Cast and School 90% tag confidence, while Urban Fantasy and Youkai each register at 80%.
Fun Facts & Trivia
- Fun fact 1
- Original creator AidaIro remains credited at the foundation of the adaptation, while Yasuhiro Nakanishi handles series composition and therefore the cour’s organization of the source material.
- Fun fact 2
- The production assigns prop design to both Koutarou Tazawa and Chiharu Koyama, separate from Mayuka Itou’s character-design role—a notable division of labor for a series built around visually specific supernatural objects and school interiors.
- Fun fact 3
- Its image pipeline includes Mizuho Shimada as director of photography and Takuya Umeda as CG director, working alongside Saki Tada’s color design rather than collapsing those responsibilities into a single visual lead.
- Fun fact 4
- Despite a comparatively modest MyAnimeList popularity rank of #3267, the cour earned an 8.07 average from 21,176 votes and ranked #646 by score, indicating stronger approval among viewers who reached this late sequel.
