Synopsis
Eleven-year-old orphan Anne Shirley has been passed from home to home, never quite finding the sense of belonging she longs for. Her fortunes shift when she’s sent to Green Gables, a quiet farm in Avonlea run by the elderly siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert—only for everyone to realize a mistake has been made. Expecting a boy to help with farm work, the Cuthberts instead meet a spirited girl with a vivid imagination and a dramatic streak.
Though uncertainty hangs over her arrival, Anne’s bright mind, lively energy, and natural warmth gradually soften Marilla and Matthew’s doubts. As she begins to put down roots, Anne encounters new experiences for the first time, from going to school to forming close friendships, learning along the way what it means to grow up amid both small joys and real challenges.
Otaku Consensus
Anne Shirley landed as a strongly liked modern literary adaptation, with viewers singling out Hiroshi Kawamata’s sensitive direction, The Answer Studio’s lush rural presentation, and the anime-specific handling of Anne’s imagination as reasons it survives the jump from page to screen. Its warm reception, reflected in a 7.86 MAL score from 17,939 votes and a 76/100 AniList score, is tempered by one recurring complaint: the 24-episode structure can feel rushed or unevenly paced for a story many fans associate with a more leisurely classic-anime rhythm.
Why You Should Watch
Watch Anne Shirley if you want historical slice-of-life drama with emotional intelligence rather than melodramatic shock turns. It scratches the same itch as World Masterpiece Theater-style adaptations: patient domestic scenes, moral friction between children and adults, school-and-community detail, and a sincere belief that small social humiliations can feel enormous when you are young. Compared with the 1979 Anne of Green Gables anime, this 2025 version offers a modern visual polish and a tighter 24-episode runway, making it easier to approach while still preserving the literary texture that longtime fans care about. It is especially rewarding if you want iyashikei warmth without fantasy, shoujo sensitivity without glossy romance-first framing, and a heroine whose imagination becomes a cinematic device rather than just a personality trait.
Key Characters
- AAnne Shirley(VA: Honoka Inoue)
Anne is the kind of protagonist fans discuss as both comforting and disruptive: a radiant talker whose imagination brightens the series while also exposing the contradictions of adult respectability around her.
- MMarilla Cuthbert(VA: Aya Nakamura)
Marilla gives the adaptation much of its adult tension, because her severity is not treated as simple cruelty but as a rigid worldview slowly tested by responsibility and affection.
- MMatthew Cuthbert(VA: Yasunori Matsumoto)
Matthew stands out through restraint, with fans responding to the way his quiet gentleness balances the louder moral rules that govern Avonlea.
- DDiana Barry(VA: Yume Miyamoto)
Diana functions as more than a childhood companion, giving the school and friendship material its emotional center and grounding Anne’s dramatic inner life in ordinary social belonging.
What Makes It Stand Out
- 1
The Answer Studio’s adaptation compresses Montgomery’s classic-literature material into a finished 24-episode TV run that aired from April 5 to September 27, 2025, a tighter format than the long-form pacing associated with older literary anime.
- 2
Reviewers repeatedly point to the animation of Anne’s imagination as a major advantage of the medium, using visual exaggeration and subjective scenery to turn internal fantasy into screen language rather than narration.
- 3
The production places notable weight on atmosphere: Tadashi Kudou serves as art director, Shiho Kuriki handles color design, and Shinji Saitou directs photography, matching the series’ AniList tags of Rural, Coastal, Historical, and Iyashikei.
- 4
Michiru Ooshima’s music credit is a major prestige marker for a domestic historical drama, giving the adaptation an orchestral identity suited to nostalgia, sentiment, and period texture.
- 5
The show’s reception is unusually centered on adaptation craft rather than novelty, with praise calling it one of the strongest anime versions of a beloved Western novel series while dissenting reviews focus mainly on pacing and compression.
Fun Facts & Trivia
- Fun fact 1
- The original creator credit goes to Lucy Maud Montgomery, making Anne Shirley part of the long anime tradition of adapting Western children’s literature rather than manga, light novels, or games.
- Fun fact 2
- Its AniList tag profile is unusually concentrated: Orphan at 96%, Female Protagonist at 95%, Coming of Age at 94%, Parenthood at 90%, and Classic Literature at 89%, accurately reflecting why viewers discuss it as family drama as much as school drama.
- Fun fact 3
- The main staff includes director Hiroshi Kawamata, character designer Kenichi Tsuchiya, sound director Kisuke Koizumi, and animation directors Yuuji Watanabe and Naoko Saitou.
- Fun fact 4
- Several reviews explicitly compare the 2025 series with the earlier 1979 Anne of Green Gables anime and the broader World Masterpiece Theater tradition, which is why much of the discourse revolves around pacing, nostalgia, and adaptation fidelity rather than whether the story works.
- Fun fact 5
- Despite being a historical literary drama rather than a high-concept seasonal title, it reached MAL popularity rank #3428 and accumulated 552 AniList favourites, indicating a dedicated niche audience rather than a purely mainstream breakout.
