Ninja Scroll

Jubei Kibagami roams feudal Japan as a wandering sword-for-hire, hardened by a betrayal that left him without a master and with little tolerance for the schemes of rival factions. His attempt to stay uninvolved collapses when he rescues Kagero, a female ninja, from an attacker whose body can turn as unyielding as stone.

Kagero, the lone survivor of her clan, presses on with her team’s final assignment: uncover the source of a mysterious plague that erased an entire village. Jubei tries to walk away, but the assailant’s comrades—supernaturally gifted ninja known as the Devils of Kimon—refuse to let him go. After a government agent poisons him and offers an antidote in exchange for exposing the Devils’ true aims and their link to the outbreak, Jubei is forced into a hunt that reaches from hidden power brokers to a conspiracy against the government—and toward a figure from his past he never expected to face again.
