Arata: The Legend

In the land of Amawakuni, Arata grows up as the son of a noble house, expecting to choose his own path—until news spreads that the princess of the matriarchal Hime clan is failing. A secret from his infancy resurfaces: his grandmother once declared him a girl at birth, and with no other female heir available, Arata is suddenly named next in line. Forced to live disguised as a woman while a replacement is sought, he becomes an unwilling witness to an assassination attempt carried out by the princess’s own protectors, the 12 Shinsho. When the blame is placed on him, Arata flees into the Kando forest, a place rumored to change all who enter.

Far away in modern Japan, Arata Hinohara dreams of escaping relentless bullying. After hearing his name called from a back alley, he strays off course and is inexplicably swapped into Amawakuni—trading places with the fugitive Arata. Awakening as a “Sho,” a warrior who can wield Hayagami, weapons said to hold divine power, Hinohara begins a journey through an unfamiliar world, relying on allies he meets along the way as he searches for a way to set things right.
