Off-duty Japan Self-Defense Forces officer and devoted otaku Youji Itami is headed to a doujin convention in Tokyo’s Ginza district when an enormous, mysterious gate appears without warning. Medieval-armored soldiers and other supernatural beings pour into the city, leaving chaos and destruction in their wake. Acting on instinct, Itami helps rescue civilians as the JSDF mobilizes to repel the sudden invasion.

Three months later, he’s assigned to lead a special reconnaissance unit within a JSDF task force crossing into the world on the other side—now known as the “Special Region.” Their mission is to investigate the unfamiliar land and pursue diplomatic ties with the empire that rules it, but failure could ignite a wider conflict that threatens both worlds.
