Golden Kamuy

In early-1900s Hokkaido, shortly after the Russo-Japanese War, veteran Saichi Sugimoto—known as “Sugimoto the Immortal” for surviving the front lines—scrapes out a living panning for gold. He’s driven by a promise to a fallen comrade: earn enough money to care for the soldier’s family, including a widow whose worsening eyesight requires treatment overseas.

A chance encounter with a drunken man’s story draws Sugimoto toward a far greater prize: a stash of stolen Ainu gold hidden somewhere in Hokkaido. The thief’s only trail is a coded map, divided into tattooed markings on the bodies of prisoners who were promised a share if they escaped. Sugimoto takes the rumor seriously after finding a corpse bearing the described tattoos—and barely survives a grizzly attack thanks to Asirpa, a young Ainu hunter whose father was among the murdered. With her tracking skills and his hard-earned instincts, the two form an uneasy partnership to recover the treasure, each for deeply personal reasons.
