The Boy and the Heron

Three years into the war, Mahito Maki is devastated when his mother dies in a hospital fire. Soon after, his father remarries Natsuko—his late mother’s younger sister—and moves the family out of Tokyo to the countryside, to his mother’s ancestral home. In the quiet of rural life, Mahito’s grief and isolation deepen, made stranger by a persistent gray heron that seems fixated on him.

Mahito’s unease grows when he learns Natsuko is pregnant, and the heron reveals it can speak—insisting that Mahito’s mother is still alive. It draws him toward a looming tower near the estate, claiming it holds a way to save her, though Mahito refuses to be easily led. But when Natsuko vanishes and Mahito sees her enter the tower, he follows, tumbling into a world beneath his own where the boundaries between life and death blur. Searching for Natsuko through this unfamiliar realm, Mahito is forced to confront what it truly means to keep living if he hopes to return home.
