Synopsis

Thirty-six students are abruptly cut off from reality when their entire school is swept into a vast, empty void. As strange abilities begin to surface among some of them, the class grows increasingly fractured—especially when the student council tries to enforce stability and those with newfound powers push back against that authority.

Their standoff gives way to a harsher truth: the place they’ve landed operates by unfamiliar rules, and understanding them is key to staying alive. When one student chooses to act on a risky conviction, the school is propelled into yet another dimension, forcing everyone to adapt to shifting circumstances while searching for the cause of their displacement—and a path back home.

Otaku Consensus

Sonny Boy is valued less as a conventional mystery and more as a controlled act of anime-original authorship, with Shingo Natsume’s direction, Madhouse’s spacious visual restraint, and the series’ philosophical coming-of-age structure giving it a distinct identity among modern isekai. Its reputation is strong but divisive: fans who meet it on its symbolic wavelength tend to champion its episodic, achronological design, while the most common criticism is that its denpa abstraction and deliberately uneven pacing can feel withholding rather than revelatory.

Why You Should Watch

Watch Sonny Boy if you want isekai without game systems, leveling, harem comfort, or explanatory handrails. It scratches the same itch as Serial Experiments Lain in the way it treats confusion as atmosphere, while its adolescent pressure-cooker energy can appeal to viewers who like the existential side of The Tatami Galaxy or Evangelion more than their genre machinery. The draw is Shingo Natsume using a school-age cast to test ideas about authority, identity, isolation, and choice across a 12-episode original structure that refuses tidy quest logic. Madhouse keeps the visual language clean and often stark rather than decorative, making the surreal rules and emotional ruptures feel sharper. If you enjoy anime that asks you to interpret rather than simply follow, this is one of 2021’s defining titles.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • 1

Sonny Boy is an anime-original project, with Shingo Natsume credited as both original creator and director, so its structure is not constrained by manga chapter breaks, light-novel volumes, or adaptation catch-up pacing.

  • 2

The series carries unusually high AniList tag weights for Philosophy at 95% and Denpa at 90%, marking it as a deliberately disorienting, idea-driven work rather than a mystery built around clean clue-solving.

  • 3

Its format is not purely linear: AniList flags Achronological Order at 73% and Episodic at 65%, which matches the show’s reputation for treating each segment as a conceptual variation rather than a standard escalation chain.

  • 4

Madhouse’s production leans on a striking design pipeline: Hisashi Eguchi provided the original character designs, Norifumi Kugai handled character design for animation, and Mari Fujino served as art director.

  • 5

The show’s audience footprint is notable for a dense, discussion-heavy original: it holds a 7.86 MAL score from 139,095 votes, MAL popularity rank #715, an AniList score of 78/100, and 6,977 AniList favourites.

Fun fact 5
Sonny Boy aired as a 12-episode summer 2021 TV anime from July 16 to October 1, 2021, placing its full run within a single cour rather than extending into a split-season format.
