Detective Sonia Summers is reassigned to the fringes of the port city Libra after clashing with her superiors. Libra is sharply divided between the affluent, politically powerful “Upper” and the troubled “Outside,” where crime, corruption, and unsettling cases tied to monstrous youkai are increasingly common. As Sonia digs into these incidents, the presence of inhuman forces begins to surface again and again.

Her investigations bring her into contact with three unusual, humanlike youkai—Bem, Bela, and Belo—who defend people from the darker creatures that prey on them. Known as Youkai-Ningen, they’re shunned by other youkai for living alongside humans, yet feared and wounded by humans when their true forms are revealed. Even so, the trio continues to hide in plain sight, holding onto the hope of one day becoming human.
